Flying with Man's Suit-no wrinkles

I have read advice on here in the past, and I cannot find it. I want to know from those experienced when a man needs a suit and is flying, what luggage do you suggest? Do you dare check the suit, or do you take it with you as a carry-on? Thanks.

My H is a costumer and here are a few tricks he uses. If you pack anything (especially wool) wrap is well in the cheap thin plastic from a dry cleaner. The static electricity helps the fabric “float” and not wrinkle. And of course when you get to your destination, run a hot shower and let the suit hang in the steamy room. Hotels hardly ever have hangers that you can take out of the closet–so bring your own. H (as well as using the dry cleaner plastic) packs his suit in a garment bag rather than a suitcase and as a carry on.

Are there any airline carry on garment bags that anyone recommends for weekend travel when needing man’s a suit?

music, thanks for the tips!

We recently traveled by air to a wedding and when packing, the zipper on H’s garment bag broke so into our checked suitcase went the suit and my dress. As soon as we got to the hotel we did the shower/steam trick musica mentioned and the suit and dress looked great.

I didn’t have glasses on and I thought it read that you were wearing a man’s suit and worried about your wrinkles.

I had images of you in a superman, spiderman suit. Then a men’s suit cut for a man but a woman wearing it, aka I LOVE LUCY.

mind candy.

LongPrime, that is pretty funny. Sorry to disappoint, but I have never warn a man’s suit. I have worn my father’s old sport’s coat as a child for Halloween as part of my costume, but that’s about the closest I have come to wearing a man’s suit.

Ok, anyone have suggestions for an airline carryon bag for a man’s suit?

We recently flew to a wedding and my son and husband had their suits in something very similar to this:

[Skyway Montage Rolling Garment Bag CLOSEOUT > Garment Bags > Luggage - eBags](http://www.ebags.com/skyway/montage_rolling_garment_bag_closeout/product_detail/index.cfm?modelid=95920)

The dimensions of ours were a bit different.

Our plane was very tiny, so we didn’t get to carry it on, they took it from us at the gate and stowed it, so I don’t know if it is actually carry on size on a “normal” sized plane.

lastone, the price seems great. I read reviews and someone else said that it must be checked, so between that and complaints about the wheels I’d still like some other suggestions. Thank you so much for your help.

my-3 sons, thank you too.

I hope that everyone enjoyed the weddings that they attended!!

Please keep suggestions coming!

This is the bag we just bought, based on the recommendation of another poster. My husband flew to Europe recently and packed a suit in the suit compartment of the bag. He carried it aboard and stowed it in the overhead compartment. When he arrived at his hotel, he hung the suit overnight and the suit was ready to wear the next day.

It held everything he needed for a 3 day trip. I highly recommend it!

patsmom, thanks! Did he carry a second bag for toiletries? Do you know if this bag holds a second pair shoes? Would you say it holds one suit and 2 shirts? Thanks.

DH uses something very similar to what patsmom recommends and slides this hanging toiletry bag into the front pocket:

[Personal Organizer: Toiletry Bags at L.L.Bean](http://www.llbean.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/CategoryDisplay?categoryId=51638&storeId=1&catalogId=1&langId=-1&from=SR&feat=sr)

It unzips, unfolds and hangs with a hanger-like hook from a towel rack or door hook. Easy.

I have traveled for years with the one patsmom marked. That’s a great price - might have to get another one. I can travel for a work week with it. It has a lot of room in the other compartment for shoes and shirts and the suit hanger compartment keeps everything neat. I do use the dry cleaner bag over the hangers, though to help prevent the folding crease.

Singersmom, do you check this bag? It seems like an excellent price to me, if it holds up. Does a toiletry bag and extra pair of shoes fit in that bag? Would it hold one suit, and 2-3 shirts?

Schmoomcgoo, thanks for the link. We have enough of those type of bags floating around our house.

It would certainly hold one suit, 2 shirts and a pair of shoes along with a toiletry kit. The inside is extremely roomy and there are a couple of outside pockets, too. My husband was so thrilled not to have to check his bag, after years of carrying a garment bag-type suitcase that had to be checked and was not rollable.

If you order it from eBags and find that it’s too small, they have free returns so you have nothing to lose. They have great customer service, too.

I never check that bag. There are 2 kinds of luggage, carry-on and lost.
I pack 2-3 hanging outfits in the hanging section. Then in the other, several alternate tops, alternate shoes, casual wear- either swim suit and shorts/t-shirt or light cover-up. Toiletries have to kept small to fit the 3-1-1, but those that are not liquid fit fine, too. It really does carry a lot. Outside pocket takes book, etc.

I am on my second bag in 10 years. I traveled with them 3 weeks a month each for over 3-4 years. Now I am down to traveling about 1x per month. One is showing a little fray around the handles but it is still sound. My husband still uses it.

I put at least one shirt that goes with a suit - and the ties - inside the suit, with the ties draped over the hangar - and then put them all in a dry cleaner bag and then inside whatever bag I’m using. If at all possible, I use my own hangar because then I just take them out and hang them and can put them, as others have noted, near the shower to steam if necessary. It doesn’t matter if I use a carry or a roll-on bag as long as I don’t actually crease the suit but instead fold it gently.

Musicamuscia is right - just take each item and hang it separately in thin plastic that you get from the dry cleaners. You can then just lay them in a suitcase this way - no hanging bag needed. I travel this way all the time a rarely have to steam, or iron anything when I get there. I use for suits, pants, blouses … all of it. This really works.

My H travels for business–at least 2-3 times per month. Usually he goes on overnight trips. He’s been carrying a Swiss-Army Tri-fold garment bag for the last 5 years. It hardly looks worn. H fits a suit/shirt/shoes and toiletries as well as a book in it. This bag fits under the seat or overhead very easily.

I bought the Ricardo for DS this past summer at the suggestion of Singersmom07 (http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/parent-cafe/729595-carry-one-suiter-garment-bag.html</a>) and it was a liberating experience for the whole family. No bag checking or luggage carousel on either end of his trip. A couple of days ago, eBags was the Ebates Daily Double. Look for a good cash back deal from Ebags.

Trick I learned when I was a newbie and traveling allot with only a small suitcase. Put the jacket, pants, shirt, and tie on a single wooden hanger and then carefully, and not over tightly, roll everything up from the bottom but stopping before the shoulders. Then put the whole thing in a plastic bag and place at the top of your suitcase. Not a wrinkle if done right.
