Focus on a few harder schools or add safeties?

Hi,
Has anyone ever tried just sending a few, very refined applications to a few colleges? I'm trying to decide if it would be better to have like a 1:2:4 Safety/match/reach ratio, or play it safer with a 2:3:4 ratio.

Personally, I would be hesitant to take the second path, because I'm not too excited about any of the potential safeties at this point, and because I would have less time to work on my individual applications essays.

Any thoughts? I'm totally ok if you disagree, just state your reasons for disagreeing.

If you’re wondering why I’m not doing school right now, I’m sick :p

There is no point in sending a few ‘very refined’ applications since the ony difference on common app between colleges is the supplement. Not all colleges have supplements and the ones that do are usually 1 or a few short answer questions or sometimes an essay. Of course, some colleges dont use common app so that’s different.

Actually, I only have one college on my list that doesn’t accept the common app.

So how many would you advise?

That may be but it is becoming increasingly common that you have to write a supplement for college applications, which means you may find yourself writing 8+ essays. I would recommend a ratio that you are comfortable with and is not reach heavy. I personally plan to do a 1:2:1 ratio…
