So I have 31 days till school starts and I have an internship running, the SAT to study for, APs to self study, Chem Olympiad to study, French distance learning to finish and books I should be reading etc.

When school starts, I'm going to be even more busy O_O.

So yeah, I'm busy, but there's 1 problem. I'm freaking addicted to the internet. Before, I used to read books and stuff, but I'm now constantly on tumblr, not so much FB or CC, but mainly tumblr. I'm part of a fandom that's pretty active and yeah, it's so much fun to be discussing stuff and talking but I don't think this is really good for my personal and intellectual growth.

Do you guys have any tips on how to just get away from distractions and focus? I need to really be on the top of my game or else I'm screwed, so any advice is x 10000000 appreciated :).

I have the EXACT same problem (except not with tumblr). Last year, I just turned off my computer and went to another room to do my homework/studying, but if you actually have to use the Internet for research, then maybe you could just block tumblr, though I don’t know how (sorry).

I know that I had better overcome the lure of the Internet before school starts (in 10 days), or else next year I’m going to get no sleep studying for SATs, APs, Honors; practicing music; volunteering; and still having a social life.

i think either you can restructure your brain with your brain, so it better does the things you want to do (i don’t have any good ideas how to do this), or you can add something to it to accomplish the same (on the extreme end would be adding methylphenidate or amphetamine, but you could also like ingest better food).

@Elf4EVA and Weeknd, good to know i’m not the only one!

I’m in the Avatar: the Last Airbender fandom, and to a lesser extent- Fullmetal Alchemist.

Tumblr is so b****y haha, but it’s so fun.

It’s just that i can’t afford to slip up and I also really think being on the internet so much is ruining me. I want to go back to the me in middle school, the girl who read books and watched the news and did lots of thinking, not a girl who’s hopelessly addicted to reblogging stuff. ugh.

I just ditched my iPhone because I was overusing it to go on the internet and went back down to a texting phone. This year is such an important year and I’m still not changing! It’s just so frustrating! I’ve started working out more and eating healthier, but my brain just needs to change like enfield suggested. I need like one of those self help books that teach self control or whatever! D:

you can try rewarding yourself with little things. like for every hour of studying, you give yourself a few M&M’s. it doesn’t work for me but apparently it helps some people.

You need to realize that the things you say you “need” to do are actually things you should do or want to do. Obviously you know that the Internet and fandom in general is not necessary. I would say the internship is necessary because you get fired if you don’t show up or do your work. All of the rest of it is studying, though, which is not strictly necessary. You should prioritize those things and maybe you’ll see that dropping a self-studied AP or putting less time into SAT or chem frees up your schedule a lot.
That being said, I agree with the people who say turn off the computer! Just don’t touch it… at all! I voluntarily went three weeks without Facebook one time and I had so much more time to do actual important stuff with. And it got really easy after the first few painful days. It really is an addiction; you go into withdrawal really early on, but if you can make it past that it’s not bad.

I try and get the procrastinating out of the way first. Trouble with Tumblr? Check Tumblr for 10-15 minutes before studying then promise yourself to get off the site for the next 2 hours. Then after that time passes, procrastinate again on that site for another 10 minutes then continue studying. It helps to wean yourself off. :)

I’m the worlds worst procrastinator… Last year I didn’t start my homework until 1 or 2. Just thinking about that makes me cringe right now… But there’s this app I’ve been using on my online classes, it’s called It’s Pomodoro Time! and it’s a timer where you work in 25 minute increments (called pomodoros… no clue why) and then it will give you either a 5 or 15 minute break, you can choose. It helps me just because I’m more likely to get back on track if there’s an app telling me to, hahahaha

Some programs now actually allow for blocking certain websites, and the internet as a whole, for a period of time, and the only way to take off that block is to restart the computer.

You and I are in the same boat. Exact same boat. In fact, I had to check the thread starter. But, anyway, just try to take a deep breath, and know that at least CC is there to cheer you on/distract you from actual work.

@sshsdancer97 I will forever thank you for mentioning the pomodoro technique! it seems a lot more effective compared to what I was doing before (which was still productive but still!)

so yeah regardless, set a time for each assignment, sit down in a place with no distractions (turn off your comp, tv, phone everything!!), change your mindset about your assignment (actually pretend you like doing it!), and then break up the assignment into chunks so it doesnt seem overwhelming. Then just do the work and just think about how much “fun” you’re having!

Trust me, its not gonna easy at first but sometimes you gotta do what you gotta do.
