FOCUS - Which do you plan on doing?

I think I'm leaning towards Global Health or Exploring the Mind. You guys?

Culture, Law & Cognitive Science -- First Choice
Forging Social Ideals -- Probably second choice
Visions of Freedom -- Third choice

In all honesty, though, they all look fascinating. These are just the ones most closely related to my current interests, but if I strayed away from business/law/politics a bit, Exploring the Mind & Humanitarian Challenges look interesting. Global Climate Change would be AWESOME, but I don't want to be at the Marine Lab first semester of freshman year (where it takes place, I believe).. and Virtual Realities looks fun, but I wouldn't want to be surrounded by programing experts that know so much more about that stuff than I do, lol. And then for the Genome one.. wasn't Duke a leading part of the Human Genome Project? That one looks like it'd be incredibly interesting, if only because of the professors you'd probably get for it..

My top three choices, in order, are Visions of Freedom, Prospective Health Care, and the Global Americas.

I like all of them!! I can't decide!! hahah!!

For CLASS of 2011 DUKIES who are applying to Focus, please check out one of the newest clusters debuting this Fall, which is based on an evolving approach to health care that is personalized, predictive, preventative & participatory. It's known as "Prospective Health Care" or "PHC" for short.

The Center for Research on Prospective Health Care at Duke spearheaded developing this cluster & we are 100% dedicated to Duke undergrads, which is why we founded the Duke undergrad PHC Club in 2005. So when you join this cluster, you have an immediate link to the Center & the Club.

Students with diverse interests are encouraged to apply. Our core courses are policy, history, psychology & immunology based.

Contact either Ziggy Yoediono, MD MBA or Max Masnick Duke '09 for further questions. Thanks!

Virtual Realities, Visions of Freedom, Exploring the Mind...

Exploring the Mind, Genome Revolution, or the Arts one...

Hey everyone...my name was mentioned in an above post...I am the student co-coordinator for the Prospective Health Care Focus cluster.

Even if you're not premed or specifically interested in health care, be sure and check out this cluster--prospective health care is very interdisciplinary, so there's definitely something for everyone. All the classes for this cluster look really good, and there is a lot of variety (see http://focus.duke.edu/program/clusters/prospective_health.php).

If you have any questions about this cluster or about Focus in general, drop me an email (mfm11 at duke dot edu). I was in the genomics cluster my freshman year, and it was a great experience for many reasons (the quality of the classes, the professors I got to know, the other students in my cluster, etc). I would definitely recommend at least thinking about doing Focus.

-Max Masnick, Trinity '09

I am really interested in Global Health, but I read that second semester FOCUS does not include a writing component. Does this mean I still have to take the required freshman writing course in addition to FOCUS? If so.. I'm definitely not doing it.

For those of you interested in COMMUNITY SERVICE, the Prospective Health Care cluster is working with the Durham Nativity School, a middle school for underprivileged boys, and other constituents to create a partnership where Duke students work closely with the middle school students to teach, learn and collaborate on a prospective health care project.

For those of you interested in TRAVEL, the Prospective Health Care cluster is in the nascent phases of hopefully setting up a short trip to Washington DC. We are collaborating with the Office of the Chancellor Emeritus at Duke University to develop this.

Stay tuned for more updates.

I've just been looking at the FOCUS program today and just decided that I really want to try it out. Many of the clusters are actually interesting and I feel it's a nice way to make some good friends.

The one that really got me interested was "Exploring the Mind", it is my first choice by far!

The others that really stand out are "Evolution and Humankind", "Visions and Freedom", and "The Genome Revolution".

Do you really have to apply to 4 clusters? Can we apply to just 3?

I wish...I might just add in a random 4th one that I'm only somewhat interested in.

I think I'll do, in order, Exploring the Mind, the Genome Revolution, The Faces of Science, and Prospective Health Care.

I would have done Evolution and Humankind but my friend at Duke advised me not to...take that as you will, that's completely hearsay.

Anyone know if writing 20 is included? I thought it was, then I read it wasn't, then I heard it was...

I wanna know what 2o_o7 asked as well :)

I think Writing 20 was included last year.. but not this year.

Since none of the FOCUS programs have a writing 20 course listed on their website, and they have in past years when there was a writing course attached, I am thinking no.

So the fall schedule for a focus student could be 2 focus classes, writing 20, and another class?

*Confirmed - The former CEO, President and Chancellor of Duke University Health System will be a special guest at the September 25 IDC.

I don't think that we need to read about prospective health care in every thread...
