Folding Bikes, Anyone?

I'm not currently living in the States, so I was curious how much folding bikes (those things with the teeny wheels that are collapsible) are used on campuses. I'm pretty sure I'll have to get a bike if I don't want to be running around all the time, but I pretty much cracked up the first time I saw one of these around where I live. They just feel a bit prissy and less-than-bike-like. Still, the idea of having something more portable and convenient sounds nice.

So, people, what's your take? Love them, hate them? See them a lot on campus or only if you want to look like a ..?

I think they’re pretty goofy. Kind of a gimmick. I don’t get what’s more convenient (having to unfold your bike?), and portability doesn’t seem any different from any other bike (practically speaking).

Not sure if you’re dorming, but all the dorms around here are strict on not letting you bring bikes into the dorms themselves, so a folding bike wouldn’t hold any benefit at all.

I was thinking perhaps you could skip the locking up and just lug it inside in a bag like some kind of heavy sports equipment?
So I take it not a lot of people on campus actually use these things?

I’ve seen some of them around, but don’t use a bike myself.

Honestly, if you think it’ll be convenient, just use one. Doesn’t matter what other people think.

To be perfectly honest, a folding bike is not common around campuses at all. If you want something more portable, many students seem to use those folding scooters instead. It seems to be much cheaper and not as heavy. Obviously it might not be as fast as a bike, but still much faster than walking.

I want a folding bike. they’re so cool. people here use skateboards, though.

I have a folding bike! Actually two!

I’m a pretty lazy person so I actually turned one of my bikes electric and now I just go and unfold it. Its a little harder to ride manually and if I did have to ride it manually I would probably die.

It really depends how small your bike is to carry it in the dorm, I’d say under 10 pounds is ok.

But its a pain in the ass when you’re not riding it and have to lug it around. Honestly though its probably easier to skate around campus, there’s a lot of people that use skateboards at my college.

edit: I’ve seen a few folding bikes here, but the ones I use are under 10 pounds, so the wheels are like 6-8 inches. Most people have those dahons or something, you’d be suprised how many compliments you’d get.

people ride some weird things in college. For example, last time when i was on campus i saw some guy with some weird skateboard/roller blades hybrid. I think they call em wave boards or something, it looks bizarre. I say ride whatever is comfortable.
