Hey Everyone...
Does anyone know about eating at Sharples with a food allergy? I'm allergic to gluten (Celiac Disease) and wondering if people have had good experiences at Swat finding food they can eat.
Thanks!

I know a few people with various dietary restrictions (vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free, nut allergies--even a gluten-free vegan!) and they do find things to eat in the dining hall. The food is well labeled and they make an effort to have options at every meal for all kinds of restrictions--but of course there's a lot less choice than most other people would have in the dining hall. In some cases they will make a separate meal for someone with a dietary restriction (this happens a lot for nut allergies, because contamination issues are so important).
Generally they are really good about working with students and doing accommodations. However, I do know several people who are gluten-free who have moved or want to move off-campus in order to get off the meal plan, citing reasons of convenience and flexibility; for instance it's much harder to get a good gluten-free meal at Tarble, the snack bar/cafe that's open later than the main dining hall. But the staff will work with you and it really is possible to find enough things to eat.

Thanks so much for your response. It's nice to know that it can be done. :-)

Just a word of advice: if there’s an item in Sharples that typically is made with a product containing gluten but the food is not marked as containing gluten, I would have a cafeteria worker check anyway. They often (at least one instance a day) mislabel a vegetarian/vegan item, so they probably occasionally mislabel allergen contents as well.
