food and meal plans?

eiffel, at UCLA you pay as part of your housing, so you get a set number of meals (swipes on your Bruin card). UCLA meals don't have different point values, you just get one meal for one swipe.

What are the best places to eat around Cal?

what if u buy a meal plan but it turns out u don't need as much per week...do you get rollovers?

Yeah, no college I know offers a mealplan that covers 21 meals a week...seriously...and you would never want to eat somewhere 21 times a week anyway

During the semester, your points don't "expire" at the end of the week. At the end of first semester, 100 of your 1250 mealpoints can rollover to spring. I don't think spring rolls over to next fall though.

thats considerablely more expensive though right?

They do not roll over from spring to fall, sweetdreams87.

neh, I really wouldn't call off campus food considerably more expensive. In many cases, considerably LESS expensive (e.g., candy, drinks, etc. at campus cafes are totally overpriced)

And food...you can get a good meal for about $5 off campus; dinner at the dining hall is 7.25 mealpoints

My mom pointed out to me that I don't eat at home 10-12 times a week now... Is it possible to try the premium 1st semester and if it's too much drop it back to standard 2nd semester? Or should I just go with the standard plan and buy more points if its not enough?
Such BIG decisions here! :)

I am really anxious to discover all of the off campus places I keep hearing about too.

just buy standard....if you run out of points, buy more, or just eat out / go to safeway

As for all the off campus places, you'll discover them in good time. Many people eat out on Fridays and Saturdays; in fact, the dining halls are practically deserted.

CA2006: Yes you could do that; but they charge $50 for the contract change.

oh u can buy points? Thats cool, why dont we all just get standard then buy more ponints if we run out?

Well, you can buy them in bulk now for a cheaper price. Most people seem to end up doing that, or just getting the standard and not buying more.

so if we get standard and dont bring enough money for outside food, we'll pretty much starve, like on the weekends?

not necessarily...you just have to be able to pace your point usage. if you see that you're running low, then just for a couple weeks stop buying from GBC (I love the place, but it's way overpriced), skip a few breakfasts, try to see if you can scrounge around for a few free meals. Best situation is if you have a friend who has WAAAY too many points towards the end of the semester and is looking to burn off the points - just mooch off that friend.

Yeah, you're not going to starve...and if you were...that would only happen at the end of the semester when you run out of points, since points, as already explained, don't work on a week by week basis but by semester. I'm actually a bit low (shopping spree at the beginning of the semester, long story), but my friends have been swiping me in.

Free food is everywhere on campus. Student organizations, campus events, author receptions...you will not starve

Also, from your posts you seem concerned about bringing money for food. You don't really need to bring lunch money like in high school or anything; I imagine you'll have some money with you for basic necessities in a bank account, and you can just use a little bit of that for food if you're low on points. Like I said earlier, in Berkeley, you can be well fed at quite a cheap price.

thanks a lot

any good pho places near campus? yum.

yeaaaaah, i think so. probably something in the asian ghetto? i know there's a pho hoa on shattuck, i think it's pretty good...

Phoa Hoa on Shattuck next to the Bart Station, I go there at least once every 2 weeks.

The pho in asian ghetto is bad.

Also, crossroads made me sick or feel like crap every time I ate there. You get sick of campus food real fast.

Yea, after a year of eating at Crossroads, I have declared that I will not eat any more burgers or fries for a long time.
