I know UCLA currently has the best food in the nation, but where does Berkeley rank? Is there a lot of variety, and is it in the all you can eat, cafeteria style? This is actually a pretty big factor for me! Thanks!

There are multiple dining halls. The quality varies, but they’re all-you-can-eat and have pretty good variety (less so for Foothill on the variety). Clark Kerr and Cafe 3 were both pretty excellent when I was still in the dorms; Crossroads was ok, with a pretty good a la carte menu for Late Night (10pm-2am iirc).

There’s also pretty excellent food around town.

Based on hearsay, UCLA’s food is far better than UC Berkeley. I’d argue half the time at Berkeley you’ll find nothing desirable in a particular dining hall. Also, the pizza is inedible most of the time.

I know that for me, Berkeley is ranked #3 in Peta’s Top 10 colleges for vegetarians/vegans, so I’m looking forward to seeing what’s on offer there!

Having dormed at UCLA for a month, and having lived next to Cal for most of my life (thus having visited the campus multiple times), I would say the dorm food at UCLA > dorm food at Cal, but the off-campus restaurants at Cal > the off-campus restaurants at UCLA (especially when looking at price).

**** Cal food

According to their info packet, their dining service received the Ivy Award, ‘considered the Oscars for the food industry.’

The dorm food is just okay other than Late Night at Crossroads, but the restaurants in Berkeley are cheaper and offer more variety than the ones in Westwood. Once you’re an upperclassman and eat out more you’ll really appreciate the off-campus options in Berkeley.

You’re going to get sick of dining hall food from anywhere. I thought Cafe 3 and LateNight were always pretty good. I eat out a lot though, and I LOVE how many restaurants you can walk to in minutes. You can get by four years in Berkeley without ever learning to cook really easily haha.

I don’t think there is any type of cuisine you won’t find here - I know there are Brazilian and Turkish and Persian restaurants within a 5 minute walk from me, as well as at least 5 different Indian and Mexican places. And a lot of pizza and burger places of course. And I live on the quieter & more residential side of campus.

probably the worst in the nation…
