FOOD at UCLA

I just wanted to clear up a common misconception for incoming freshmen. You can eat at ANY dining hall, not just the one that's nearest your dorm.

Of course, it's more convenient to be located near the dining hall that you like.

Each dining hall has a general theme...
Covel = mediterranean, always has pasta and pizza
Rieber = "southern," also has "fiesta fridays"
Hedrick = not sure, but they have sushi lunch twice a week
De Neve = not sure, but i think its american? they also seem to serve a lot of asian dishes, and also has a sandwich bar

all dining halls have salad bars and serve the regular burgers, fries, pizza, etc.

Eateries:
Puzzles: fast food (burgers, pizza, etc.); also has breakfast
Bruin Cafe: sandwiches, soup bowls... also has ice-blended drinks, smoothies, coffee, pastries
Crossroads: Mexican food
not sure what the new eatery in the rieber vista will be serving

Also, once a quarter, there's "theme dinner." For example, Hedrick (1st quarter) had a Western theme, and there was steak, bbq ribs, bbq chicken, bacon western cheeseburger, pasta, homemade churros, etc. Dang that meal was really good =) Other themes have included: brazilian, east asian (i forgot if it was chinese or korean), indian, and harry potter (lol)

You can also order take-out full pizza and bbq chicken wings from Rieber, but these cost several meal swipes.

And like you've heard already, the food is really good.

current ucla students, feel free to add in.

oh god. im hungry... stomach growls

go swipe yourself into the late-night eateries... bruin cafe and puzzles. open till 2am

I eat at De Neve all the time (since I live at Evergreen :P). De Neve= hodgepodge. At the 2 specialty kitchens, the front sometimes serve something w/ pasta or something asian. The back feature kitchen sometimes has american (i.e. today, ribs but most of the time some sort of chicken- rotisserie, chicken w/ some sort of gray sauce?, etc), something asian (ie korean ribs), or something mexican (ie burritos). The pizza kitchen area also usually has some sort of italian dish going on on the side (lasagna, spaghetti, etc). I haven't stayed often for the weekends, but according to the menu, they're constant on seafood Fridays and Mexican Saturdays (they sometimes change from what they said they would serve on the menu- does anyone know if they stay consistent with this?).

warning: the italian dishes in the pizza kitchen of de neve are probably the only food that sucks at UCLA. i cant believe berkeley's lasagna destroys UCLA's. =(

Haha yeah they do suck

OMG, FOOD LOOKS AWESOME. Just wondering out of curiosity, how does USC's food compare? Because right now, i am trying to decide on USC or UCLA

With the higher tuition, I would hope they feed you well at SC...

ooh did any of you (current UCLA students obviously) eat at De Neve last quarter for the theme dinner? The korean beef w/rice dish in the back was THE BEST food I've had in the dining halls in the past two years. Damn, they need to make that again.

I would also like to offer my counter to kfc4u's original post - Covel food SUCKS.... haha I'm sorry, but it's true. I couldn't stand their food last year, and I haven't gone this year. Their pizza is the best thing they have there, and it can be off and on.
Rieber's "fiesta fridays" are amazing, I have to admit. mmmm churros :p

What I didn't get about De Neve's theme dinner last quarter was why, during an asian theme night, did they serve churros? Unless I've badly mistaken the foods origin and it in actuality originated in Asia?

is it buffet..like one swipe gets you all you can eat for that meal?

yes (10 characters)

From two meals of experience, I can say that USC has crappy food. Breakfast is fine, can't go wrong with pancakes (where was the cereal, though?), but dinner was awful.

I'm tempted to go to UCLA just to discover what a "harry potter" theme dinner would be like... ;)

oh we forgot to mention, very good good omelets are made for breakfast (for weekends at least, i dont eat breakfast during weekdays so someone can fill in for me here plz)

cereal is also available at every meal if desired.

yea its buffet... i heard UCSD and berkeley uses a point system. i also heard bananas were incredibly overpriced at UCSD.

whats the food system at UCLA? UCI is a fat buffet that is a good price.; I've been looking at UCSD. The biggest ripoff ever. Pt. system is stupid and each meal costs 4pts = $4

Covell is GOOD. Well, come on. You get sick of it in the end anyways. I dunno, I haven't gotten sick o f Cal food yet =P

Food system at Berkeley is #1. We pioneered the point system here man. $1 = 1 pt. Start off with 1250 pts. Swipe as much as you want in a day, buy from campus cafes for $1 = 1 pt. How much simpler is that? I don't understand why schools can't do that.

UCLA's system (not point system)--

Positive:
For dining hall (de neve, covel, rieber, hedrick), one swipe = buffet

Neutral:
For food eateries (puzzles, bruin cafe, crossroads), one swipe = one meal

Negative:
For smoothies and other drinks, one swipe = 1 smoothie or 2 bottled drinks

I don't know why so many people hate Covel... I like Covel =)

well, i guess cuz i'm a pasta fan and i live closest to it

If you guys are visiting though, try De Neve. probably the best overall

NON POINT SYSTEM = NEVER POSITIVE.

It's buffet at Cal. It's 7 pts for dinner, 6 for lunch, 5 for breakfast. I eat breakfast a lot and I still have 800 pts past midsemester. We start with 2500 in the whole year btw. I'm gonna have 300 pts / $300 left over. How many 12 packs of cokes can I buy with that? =)

That's why they can price stuff like they do at 7-11 or other stores. you know whats a ripoff and what's not unlike at UCLA... 1 swipe = 1 smoothie or 2 bottled drinks?? BARTERING SYSTEM? Ok. I mean I walk into Ramonas and I see Panini Sandwich for $3.79. Gee 3.79 pts. Ok, can do. 20oz Soda for $1.19. 1.19 pts. My lunch is gonna cost under $6 or 6 pts at the DC. Simple. I'll live another day and have enough points.

And at UCLA you have to get PREMIER to swipe people? Pay $300 and swipe people in? I swipe for anyone anytime no problems here.
