Hi there! I was just wondering if there were any places on/around campus that offered decent vegetarian or vegan food. I'm slightly worried that I'll end up eating garden salads for the next four years. Also, is there a grocery store anywhere near the campus or have you found that you don't really need one living at Cal? Any information would be greatly appreciated =)

There’s a Trader Joe’s three blocks west of campus on University Ave and Martin Luther King Jr Blvd, reachable by the 51, 52, and 49 buses.

Good vegetarian food can be had at Intermezzo (on Telegraph/Dwight) and Saturn (Oxford/Allston). There is also Moaz and Cho on Telegraph, but those are relatively new and I don’t have a strong opinion about them.

Dining halls always have vegan food. And whole foods is just a short bus ride away. As well as safeway and trader joes. there’s a place called Sam’s Market on telegraph but I would recommend whole foods.

There are many, many choices for vegetarian or vegan eating - running the gamut from zero meat, raw only places to restaurants that field a small number of vegetarian choices in a sea of meat dishes. Here are a few examples from the area to illustrate the diversity and huge availability of choices open to you:

Plenty of supermarkets and smaller shops within reasonable walking distance of campus, including Andronicos, Safeway, Trader Joe’s, and more choices a bus ride away such as Whole Foods . . .

Holy cow, thank you guys so much for your help! I didn’t realize Cal had so many amazing places to eat. Between that and the Whole Foods/Trader Joe’s nearby I think I’ll be set! Rider730 that list is insanely helpful. I remember eating at a Maoz a while back, but there aren’t any within several hundred miles of where I live so I miss it.
