Are meals formally served on weekends (to the same extent as during the week)? What about during breaks?

On Saturdays, breakfast and lunch are served, but the serveries are closed for dinner to encourage students to go off-campus and try one of Houston’s many restaurants (there’s almost always free/cheap food somewhere around campus anyway, though).

On Sundays, the serveries are open for brunch and dinner because most students don’t wake up early enough to go to breakfast anyway. haha

Breaks vary depending on the length and significance of the break.

The serveries are closed over the major breaks such as Thanksgiving, Spring Break, Christmas etc. The campus is deserted at this time anyways, so I would strongly advise against staying.

^ but is staying an option? do you still have access to your dorm, etc? i highly doubt that S would be coming home for thanksgiving to come home 2-3 weeks later for christmas break… just ain’t in the budget.

Staying is definitely an option for Thanksgiving and even Spring Break, but not for winter break/christmas (the dorms close for these). In all likelihood though, your son will have a friend who lives nearby who will invite them for Thanksgiving. This seems to happen to a ton of people who can’t/don’t want to pay to go home. I have never gone home for Thanksgiving (you’re right it is like 2 weeks before winter break) and for the first three years I went to a friends house for at least Thursday and Friday. This year I decided to stay on campus and get some work done (it’s a really busy time). I know some years colleges have a little dinner on Thanksgiving for the people who are sticking around, but even if they don’t, all of the colleges have kitchens so you can manage to feed yourself for the 3 days the serveries are closed. Also, it’s not unheard of to be invited to a professor’s house for Thanksgiving (I think the offer has been made in 2 of my classes) so that’s always a possibility as well.

Long story short, yes you have access to your college over Thanksgiving and Spring Break.

crazymomster - Your S can stay for Thanksgiving. sffgoalie has mentioned some good options, such as a professors house or staying with local/close by friends. Many college masters host thanksgiving dinners if they are staying in town and often have students join them.
