What sort of free food opportunities are there and how often do they occur?

There’s a blitz (e-mail) bulletin you can choose to monitor that lists several free food events as they are announced. Here’s what it contains as of now:

4/15: Talks in Math and Pizza- 6pm (math lecture, free Ramunto’s)
4/15: Dartmouth Energy Conservation Campaign kick-off- 3pm, free cheeses, fruit, local breads, and more
4/15: Lunch with the co-founder of Flickr (first 8 to RSVP)- noon, free lunch
4/15: Congrats to Professor who won Student Assembly award- 5pm, catered
4/16: Hang out with ESD (environmental studies division of the Dartmouth Outing Club) people- noon, free ice cream
4/16: Alumni Appreciation Week (lunch with alumni employees)- noon, free Hanover Inn lunch
4/22: Lunch with an author- noon, free Hanover Inn lunch

Usually free food events are posted only a few days in advance, but the list for Wednesday and Thursday should be complete (though I assume there will also be a First-Year Forum event for freshmen at 6pm Wednesday, free dinner). I suppose if you schedule none of your classes for noontime and have no extracurriculars in the evenings, you could conceivably eat most of your meals for free. I should also mention that there were enough free food events that I only had to buy two or three meals during all of orientation week, and I probably could have completely abstained from using my meal plan had I not been so eager to eat Dartmouth Dining Services food!

Here are some possible explanations:

Best places to entertain your parents if you like to keep family and campus lives relatively compartmentalized:

Jesse’s in Hanover
Norwich Inn - just across river in VT
Bentley’s- in Woodstock

I don’t know which meal plan S has–whatever his FA packages includes–but he says he has no problem whatever staying within it. His favorite seems to be Homeplate.

BTW, having just returned from Parent’s Weekend I can testify that The Canoe Club is good. Mai Thai is a little iffy (some dishes excellent, some eh).

I have a question about the Dartmouth roll over dining plan. The dining site says the remaining dartmouth dollar expires at the following year’s commencement. ie buy plan in fall of 2009, expires in 2010 commencement. However, what happens if you are a sophomore taking a summer term? Does the money rollover to the summer term too? Surely the commencement is in the fall.

@MedSLV: Commencement is another name for graduation, which happens after the end of Spring term in June. The way it works is, if you are on the “Green Plan”, you have:

At the beginning of Fall term:

$1130 in normal DBA (declining balance account; nobody says “dartmouth dollar”) and $200 in Topside DBA for use at Topside, the campus convenience store, to spend each term.

Let’s say you spend $1000 in regular DBA and $150 in Topside DBA. Since Topside DBA does not roll over, at the start of Winter term, you will have:

$1260 in normal DBA and $200 in Topside DBA. Let’s say you spend another $1000 in regular DBA and $150 in Topside DBA. Then at the start of Spring term, you will have:

$1390 in normal DBA and $200 in Topside DBA. Anything you do not spend this term you will lose. No matter what, if you are on campus Summer term, you will start out with:

$1130 normal DBA and $200 in Topside DBA. In short, normal DBA expires in the middle/end of June each year. Topside DBA expires at the end of each term.

Note that students may use up their Topside DBA for normal purchases by specifying at the check-out line. Students may NOT use normal DBA at Topside.

I hope this helps.
