I'm curious about the food and other nourishment on campus. What's it like? I don't want to know what they serve or what hours. I just want to hear from students about how that aspect of life compares with life at home.

Bump........

At Kent the food is decent. I don't usually eat breakfast, but for lunch the hot meals can be good, and there's always a sandwich bar. Lots of ice cream, not incredible healthy food. Great pastries, but zero fresh fruit. Dinner can go either ways, but usually I leave feeling decently satisfied with whatever I've eaten.

I personally really like the food at SPS. I even like it more than my mother's food! I mean there is so much variety and dessert everyday, and when I go home I like have to eat what my parents make me and there is no other choice. Also because many students don't eat breakfast even when they are at home our school provides apples, bagels, cream cheese and peanut butter in our schoolhouse so that you have no reason not to eat in the mornings. The only reason why you would ever be malnourished would be because you don't know how to pick food for yourself because there are plenty of healthy choices. And luckily if you ever need to get a healthy eating plan together we have a nutritionist and you can always make an appointment with them, plus it's free!

But no matter where you go people will always complain about school food. It can never be your mother's homestyle cooking but it is not horrible either. The way I think of it though is that it is better to go to a smaller school when it comes to food because the less food they have to make, the less mistakes they make involving the food and the better quality it is.

I hear the food at Deerfield is legendary for its superlative taste ...

My parents are truly pasta and delivery pizza people, so I'm sure any boarding school food would be superior. Except for Middlesex, the food was sup-par there. I tried to eat a meal at every school I visited, which really wasn't possible, but I got to most. Groton had the best food by far. I also was really impressed by St. Paul's and Deerfield. And the potato chips at Choate (even though I'm not applying there lol)...LEGENDARY!!!! I'm pretty sure that all school's meals get boring every once in awhile, but I would certainly be satisfied at any of the schools I applied to. If you want specific descriptions of food at each place, PM me.

Lord, I almost thought that said superlaxitive food. hehe

OK I feel really dense asking this question but how do you eat a meal when you visit? Do you just go to the regular dining hall? Get permission from admissions? Pay cash at the dining hall? How does it work? I didn't know we could have arranged to eat at the schools.

Usually they would offer it, but we didn't eat at any of our visits.

They didn't offer me anything....Im offended. :D

At every school we ate at, it was during dining hall hours that I finished my interview. Then the interviewer or receptionist offered to let us eat. We just walked to the dining hall by ourselves and served ourselves, and we didn't have to pay. I don't think there were even any registers to pay at. We didn't eat at Deerfield because it was sit-down, but I saw some of the food and it looked wonderful. mcpix, if you visited at times outside of dining hall hours, that's probably why you didn't get an offer. I'm sure it has nothing to do with you, you seem like an amazing applicant.

What about Exeter and Andover?

Gah, the food at my current school is so gross and nasty and every-other-synonym-for-gross-and-nasty! ... and its expensive! Plus, I am so craving a nice cheesy, oily pizza - international American food sucks! I'm sure whatever they have will be an improvement of this.

And - does the tuition include food, or not? I'm assuming it doesn't, but is that the case for every school? Prices, much, too?

i'm very sure tuition includes food, because tuition isn't actually "tuition". it includes room and board, and room and board likely includes food.

even if not, it all charges to you parents so you don't really have much to worry about (unless you eat tons of expensive ice cream behind their backs like me...)

We eat every time we go to NMH....the food quality and selection is incredible!

Every time I have ever been on a tour or visit, a meal is included. We visited twice for each of our two sons (initial visit and revisit). There is always a structured schedule for these visits which includes food throughout the day (i.e. coffee, juice and pastries on arrival, lunch at the dining hall, and snacks/desserts offered throughout the day).

It matters where you eat...if you eat at "the grill" at exeter it charges a card that your parents have to pay for. And your parents pay for your normal food plan before the school yr.....if they want you to eat

The food's all right, there's always plenty of options. Sometimes the food is good (most of the time it is), but after a while you do get tired of it. They always have good food during parents weekend.
