Hi, I'm a junir who is hoping to apply to cals as either a food science or nutritional science major. i just had a few questions about the two. Which is considerd the more rigourous and challenging of the two? which has a higher placement rate into graduate schools? What are the typical difference between students in each of these programs? also I know people hate this question but... which is more competitive to be accepted too?

I ask these question because I feel both of these majors are a great fit for me and I am just trying to decide which would be the better choice for me to apply to. Thanks in advance.

It's not so much a difference in rigor as a difference in focus.

Food science is oriented toward the food, nutritional science toward the person who eats it. Food science majors tend to be looking toward careers in the food industry, often in product development or food engineering. Nutritional science majors tend to be looking toward more health-oriented careers. Some will become dietitians, for example, and others are aiming at medical school.

I've taken courses in both the food science department and nutrition. I agree that food science is aimed a lot at marketing, composition etc...

Nutrition is focused on the person. I have a nutrition minor and my courses focused on nutritional biochemistry and management of disease via nutrition. If you're interested in any sort of health career, I recommend NS over food science.

Depends on the course. All of the NS courses I took (115, 331, 345, 441) are considered BCPM on AMCAS. They all had a heavy emphasis on biology and biochemistry.

We had quizzes after every SOAP note...and on quiz one she decided it was too hard and gave us all 100s. Quiz 2 was easy...Quiz 3 she said, "I want you all to do well, so if you're stuck please turn to your neighbor and as for help." We never got around to quizzes 4 and 5.

For SOAP notes...they take time. But if you've paid attention in class you won't have trouble...expect to do a lot of research and outside reading for them. You get to work in groups of up to 5 on these. With the exception of the 2nd assignment, my partner and I got perfect scores.

The paper is also fun...you're allowed a max of 2 pages. She likes interesting topics...so pick a good one. You also get to work with a partner for the paper.

The final is long...but also easy. If you've been doing well on the SOAP notes you'll get at least a 90 on the final.

SOAP = subjective, objective, assessment, plan. Dr. U will teach you how to do them.

basically...she gives you a case study where you get all the info about the patient: disease, age, height, background info, lab data. Your job is to identify all the possible nutritional problems the person might face and how to manage them via nutrition.
