how does the meal plan work? options?

To add...how is the food in general?

Meal plans at Dartmouth are based on a pay for what you eat system. You can go into a dining hall and buy one cookie or 20 hamburgers. All items are priced what they are really worth. Basically, Dartmouth doesnt use a point system (where a hamburger might be one point) or an all-you-can-eat system (where you have meal tickets for 3 meals a day).

You can read about everything DDS (Dartmouth Dining Services) here: http://www.dartmouth.edu/~dds/

DDS has proposed many changes for next year regarding meal plans. You can read an article in the D about it: http://www.thedartmouth.com/article.php?aid=2006021401020

A lot of students arent happy with the way meal plans work now, or how DDS has proposed they work in the future. So, Im not really sure what the result will be. I think that freshman will probably get the $1200 meal plan first term, and then be allowed to get a bigger or smaller meal plan each subsequent term.

There are a number of places to eat on campus. The Hop has a grill and sandwich place and is known to have tasty food but can be a bit greasy and unhealthy. Collis makes made-to-order omelettes and stir-fry, has a huge salad bar, and a big selection of breads and baked goods. Thayer dining hall is composed of Homeplate, which has good sandwiches and a grill, Food Court, which has everything, and Pavilion, which serves Kosher, Halal, and Sakahara foods. Each night, almost all the dining places have a special like shrimp with pasta, general Tsos chicken, or roast beef with gravy.

Right now, Dartmouth ranks #11 on Princeton Reviews Best Campus Food List. The only other Ivy on the list is Cornell. Basically, Dartmouth has pretty good food. Dartmouth tries to give you a lot of choices food from different cultures, healthy food, yummy but unhealthy food, vegetarian food, etc. My friends from Brown have been shocked when they saw all we could eat.

If you get bored with Dartmouth food, you can always go eat in town. We dont have many restaurants in Hanover, but a lot of different cuisines are represented: Italian, Thai, Chinese, Japanese, Indian, and American. We also have Subway, Quiznos, The Wrap, Ben & Jerrys, a Starbucks in the bookstore, a diner, and a handful of coffee shops.

Dartmouth is no 5 star restaurant, but most students are happy with the quality and variety of the food here.

2 of the biggest changes are a $100 max spending at topside effective this summer and a new rollover of your declining balance. Where students either used or lost any remaining money on their plans at the end of each term (D feed a a few friends each term and donated $ to the food drive), you can now roll over the balance into the next term. All monies must be used by the end of the spring term.

thanks sybbie! this was a great help.

Hey, I know you were referring to D's meal plan and not restaurants in the surrounding area, but I'd just like to point out that the restaurants are completely awesome (if you didn't know that already)! I visited in the summer and fell in love with D, and the food... I unfortunately got rejected ED, but good luck to you at D and congrats! I really long for the food I had there :/.

When I visited Dartmouth, I found a fly in my sandwich.

The food is great, i havent gotten bored at all this year.

One high point - Thayer is open till 1 am at night - great for late night food runs, especially when you're working on a paper or studying and need a break

Low point - some things are ridiculously overpriced.

Food is definitely not "great." It's college food afterall. But I found it tolerable. I cooked often in my senior year since I got so tired of it.
