I'm using food quality as one of my deciding factors for the 7 colleges I applied to. I need your honest opinion: How is the food? The meal plan(s)?
Thanks

I don't know, really. I mostly eat off-campus or shop at a grocery store. I sometimes go to Subway. I stopped going to Chick-fil-a.

Food here is expensive, I assume as other colleges
ARAMARK, the service provider, had successfully gotten Student Government and the university administration to back a meal plan for next year. Previously we had a pay-as-you-go system where we paid for individual items. Next year we're having a meal plan system, buffet style. Freshman 15? I'm thinking Freshman 30.

But, eh, I don't know. There are some people that only eat on-campus, and that really sucks. I prefer shopping at Harris Teeter and eating off-campus. Now I have to figure out how many meals per week I want next year. Oy. Supposedly food quality is supposed to increase now. Simple demand and supply, I guess. Demand for food quality is mandatory and must go up. I think supply of quality will shift out somewhat. Overall, somewhat higher quality (I don't really know how much) but the price will be high, at least to me. I think it is something like $6 a meal. I'd rather cook myself a hamburger, hot dog, etc.

So, if you have a car or plan on being pals with people that do, don't go all out and sign up for something like 3 meals a day. On the other hand, if you are going to live at Wake 24/7 and eat only Wake food, good luck. Overall, I don't know. I guess food quality can't get any worse. I think it will get better. Eh.

I think I'm going for the second to last minimum meal plan. See how it goes. I hope I didn't scare you all away :). There is more to Wake than food!

I always eat on campus (no car, and no real time to go off campus even if I did have a car given that I'm in organic chemistry this semester ;)), and so I think that I have a slightly different opinion on the food plan/food quality than emsibdn. The food here really isn't that bad. Granted, it's not gourmet quality (although some of the things that the Magnolia Room, open only for weekday lunch, serves is really pretty good), but it's decent, and I've noticed a pretty wide variety. We've got a salad bar, Pizza Hut, Subway, Pasta place, Southern-style food place, burger/grill place, Chik-Fil-A, and a couple of convenience store places. What I have noticed is that there aren't a whole lot of healthy options. The salad bar (which, admittedly, doesn't have a whole lot of variety) and Subway, if you choose wisely, are about it. That said, Aramark has told us that the reason for remodeling the pit (our main cafeteria) this summer is so that we will have healthier food choices.

However, emsibdn is right that it's fairly expensive and going to get more expensive, especially for the freshmen next year. They're going to institute an all-you-care-to-eat meal plan in the pit, but the other locations on campus are going to remain a la carte. Unfortunately, all upperclass students living on the main part of campus will be required to buy at least eight meals a week in the pit. Right now, I never eat in the pit eight times a week, and I also rarely eat enough for it to be worth the price of one meal. Freshmen will have to buy at least 14 meals a week, I think (don't hold me to that number).

I guess that what I'm saying is that the food here isn't a reason to avoid coming to Wake, but neither is it one of the reasons to choose Wake above all other schools. If you want to talk about incentives to come here, let's talk about our laptops :D.

Right, I agree. I'm not trying to slam the food. I just dislike ARAMARK and the food they serve :). The thing that bothers me is freshness and variety (supposedly both are supposed to go up). I mean, when an off-campus Subway has offers a better foot-long sub for a dollar less (w/o tax), something is wrong.

But I agree, the main reason for coming to Wake should be for laptops such as the one I am typing on right now :). Just kiddin. Seriously, don't worry about the food, it won't kill you. SG says it is supposed to get better. Ginny, do you know if the SG President is going to run again? or is he graduating?

I'm not trying to scare people off or anything, but here's the minutes from a Student Government discussion ( http://sg.wfu.edu/Information/Minutes/General%20Assembly/1-12-05.doc )

i. Jon: for it to function, they cannot swallow that loss, I see the university strapped in so many areas
ii. Trip: there arent a lot of things we cant control, food quality will be better, until we feel comfortable, we wont go into referendum
iii. Jon: we were given some sort of a say, you need to take that into consideration, be open minded
iv. Reggie: thank you trip and jon for dealing with this issue, I am concerned because the money they will bring in will pay for a considerable amount of renovations but I dont think students should bear that sort of responsibility, what is the financial commitment students will make? What is to say that the pit wont be renovated in time?
v. Jon: I brought it up in last meeting, students arent excited about footing bill for aramark renovations, prices only go up, food will be more expensive in 10 years
vi. Trip: aramark is paying for renovations
vii. Reggie: are students actively investing in renovations or is aramark doing it themselves?
viii. Trip: its got to be somebodys dollars
ix. Jon: I cant explain why subway isnt open, I dont think the subway is as big concern
x. Reggie: subway is a microcausim of what could happen, I think aramark could do well
xi. Bryan: aramark can improve their accountability, survey
xii. Jon: they do surveys every year
xiii. Bryan: focus group, press releases, in info packet, we talked about other schools, that is fine but can we get a description about what duke has and we dont?
xiv. Karl: j Anderson is soulless, he said the reason we could never convert to point system, he said we could never split deacon dollars, why now we can have technology to do this?
xv. Trip: because you are still on campus
xvi. Jon: that is money that is restricted to on campus, 3 different parts of the card, currently use one of those
xvii. Karl: I dont buy for a second what aramark says, gw has better food options plus off campus

COME TO WAKE FOR ACADEMICS...

AND LAPTOPS!!!

I'm in a horrible mood, so don't pay much attention. This week has been hell. Good luck to you all, April 1st is coming soon!

I think that Trip Chalk is graduating, but I could be wrong. There was some big to do about him running in his sophomore year (to be president in his junior year) and not winning because of something that a lot of people thought was unfair (needless to say, I'm a little hazy on the details). I've not had many problems with SG this year, although I'm not sure that they have a whole lot of power.
