what are some neccessities to have in college? I will have a fridge and microwave...

though im not in college but i have been in college like programs (stayed in dorms for couple of months). i would say just bring food that you eat most often that doesnt require the use of a stove. so if u eat ramen a lot bring it, chips, fruit, soup...

For me it will be breakfast food because the minimum meal plan is 9 per week.

I don't think I'm even taking a microwave because I won't be doing any heating, and if I really need one, they have one in the "kitchen".

Nothing is a universal necessity, particularly if you're on a meal-plan, but I found it handy to have:

Stuff to snack on in the room or put in a baggie (goldfish, chocolate teddy grahams, cheez-its, wheat thins, trail mix, pretzel sticks, dry cereal, peanut butter).

Stuff I could grab on the way to class if I was hungry (pop-tart, granola bar, cereal bar, fruit from the dining hall).

Stuff I could eat if I missed a meal (canned soup, oatmeal, ramen, easy mac).

Water, tea, maybe some juice or soda, and packets of hot chocolate.

I pretty much kept something from each category available throughout college. I had enough so that if I really wanted a snack or needed something to tide me over, I had it, but I was never overly tempted to eat in my room, skip going to the dining hall, or whatever.

Just start out with a few snacks you know you like, and figure out what you'll actually use. I knew people who did regular grocery shopping, liked to use the kitchens to make their own meals, and kept tons of food in their rooms, and I knew people who didn't keep any at all. Up to you. Also, obviously, depends on if you're planning to shop for meals or for snacks.

i personally hate the meal plans available so i do a lot of eating in my dorm. i like having bread and the cracker sliced cheese - with a microwave melted cheese on bread is just about the most satisfying thing at 1 am :) i also buy a lot of frozen dinners and microwaveable foods that i like. cereal is also good. since i like to do a lot of cooking on my own in the kitchen, i also have things like oil, salt, garlic powder etc...but i'm sure most people don't cook..

I also pretty much keep to the same categories as Student615 above. The only additional thing is that I try and keep some fresh fruit handy as well (either I get it from the grocery store or swipe it from the cafeteria).
