How does it work?
I went to UC Irvine and it was all-you-can-eat. just swipe your card and get anything you want, as much as you want. Is it the same at UCSD? Or do you pay by meal?

UCSD has a meal point system. It’s like a 7-11. You swipe and you get your meal. It’s not a buffet style like irvine or UCLA which sucks!

But the food quality isn’t that bad.

And the points you don’t use for meals and other things can be spent to buy stuff at the UCSD store at the end of the year, or so from what my cousin told me. He went there, said it was an okay system.

Hope that helped XD

So it’s like a credit card where you pay per meal?
So if I wanted a sandwich and an ice cream I would pay for both? Instead of Irvine where I can just grab anything?
I guess that’s good because I won’t eat as much.

yeah, you swipe once for a specific meal, and it charges you for that.

In a way, it’s more careful to not over eat as you would at irvine or la haha.

It’s a good way to be careful of freshman 15 :)

I don’t think this system is all that bad!

ok cool. thanks!

You start out with $2750 on your card. ($2100 ish for apartment peeps).

Every food item has a price. For example, spaghetti = $4.95, glass of juice = $0.99 (not sure the exact prices, just an example)

So you basically deduct each time until you get to $0 at the end of the year.

I actually like this system better. On the one hand, you can get a lot more with the buffet system. But what if you just wanted to get a drink or a muffin? You would have to use up a whole ‘meal swipe’ at UCLA/Davis. Here, we pay exactly what we get.

There are lists posted around the dining halls telling you how many meal points you should have at the end of each week, to help you budget. You can add more if you need to, and if you have too much at the end of the year, there’s a list of stuff (stationary, kitchen appliances) you can buy. Or you can just load up on a ton of snacks.

^ yeah like that.

Haha, good explanation XD.

Ooo, I like this system. (: It’ll prevent me from splurging on food.

I’m so excited for the food too : ] hahaha

here’s a list of places to eat on campus and what types of payment they accept:

sierra summit/mercado and ocean view terrace are the best places to spend meal points. Also if you have left over points at the end of the year you can spend them on appliances at earls place in warren.

I remember hearing that Sierra Summit is going to be closed for renovations. Is that true? I was looking forward to dining there…

I heard that, too. I looked on the website and it didn’t say anything, though.

I went to Sierra Summit for Scholars Day and I was told it is being closed next year.

sierra summit noooooooooooooooo. the menu looks good there

Next year as in 2010? so we’ll have a quarter to eat there.

I think it might be next year as in next school year. xP

hmm, does the food system apply only to fall admits?
how bout winter admits who arent guaranteed housing?

The meal plan is included in the room and board charges. If you don’t live on campus, you would have to charge your account extraneously.
