Food

I've heard that the food at UR isn't the best. Is this true? I'm a very picky pescetarian allergic to dairy. Would I be happy eating at UR? (Currently this is actually my biggest concern...)
Are there any good food alternatives that are close-by?

I also heard that Rochester’s food isn’t good, so I’m thinking it’s a widely accepted fact.

yea food is nothing to brag about and I am not even going to try to smooth anything out here. The thing with food is that it’s nice the first 3 or 4 weeks of school, then you get tired of it and soon you will find your favorite place to eat and will pretty much neglect everywhere else.

D is a freshman at the U of R. She attended a residential high school with one cafeteria that offered 3 choices at every meal. She finds the food options at U of R adequate. There are 2 dining halls plus “the Pit” in Wilson Commons. My favorite when I visit is Connections at Rush Rhees (quiches, local baked goods etc). Obviously anyone with dietary restrictions will be limited. Rochester is also home to the BEST grocery store chain in the US - Wegmans. The dorms have kitchens which is a great alternative. There are also great restaurants in Rochester. Yes these alternatives may cost more. But
the point I’m trying to make is while the dining may be typical and repetitive because Rochester isn’t a tiny town there some options available.

Hey… thought I’d include my two cents… Rochester has 7 dining options on campus, all of which have their distinct pros and cons. As a staff member, I only eat on campus once every week or two, so I don’t have to deal with the day to day variety (or lack thereof) of cafeteria food, and my opinion should be taken with a grain of salt. But, in my opinion the food is pretty good - I’ve never had a meal I didn’t like. We have a student who just graduated working in our office for the next few months - I’ll see if I can get him to add his opinion to this thread.

Also, Wegmans is amazing. I have dinner there frequently - they have a $6 blackened Mahi Mahi sandwich that is likely the best sandwich I have had or will ever have. :)

Great news to all worried about the food at UR - it’s 4 times better than it was 4 years ago!
When I came in as a freshman, the “bad food” stereotype existed. By the end of this post you will have a new perception of UR food from a recent grad. I found this site after a quick search, [Welcome to CampusDish at Rochester!](http://www.campusdish.com/en-US/CSNE/Rochester/Locations/TheMelioraRestaurant.htm)
If you want to double check anything I say, or find out about a specific dietary need, the emails are in there.

Things have changed since my freshman year. 3 new dining areas have been created on the River Campus, including:

Pura Vida - a sandwhich, salad, coffee, etc. stand in our new Biomedical Engineering / Optics building, which is great when your on that specific end of campus. Quality is great, fresh stuff everyday.

Common Connections - same as above with more variety, including soups, bagels, and desserts. This is in the Library and is a hugely popular spot. It also includes a ton of organic food.

Starbucks - Apparently the biggest Starbucks in the United States, which is pretty cool. Standard Starbucks quality stuff + some snacks. This place is of course extremely popular with the coffee/latte/mocha crowd. (not me, I only went there for cookies)

The places I mostly ate on campus included Danforth (all you can eat dining option, menu changes daily), Douglass (most popular), and The Pit (burgers, fries, subs, salads, pizza).

In my opinion, if you can’t find variety here, then you’re not looking. The food is way better than 4 years ago. I lived on campus for 4 years, I ate on campus at least twice everyday. I would consider myself someone who eats everything - except sushi (and we have that here too).

Rochester Restaurants are diverse and many. We have so many ethnic choices within a 15 minute drive from campus (or shuttle ride), that you won’t even experience half of them in your 4 years here. Thai, Mediterranean, Chinese, Italian, Indian, TGI Fridays, we have it all. I’m not just talking 1 of each either, within 15 minutes from campus I know of 4 Thai restaurants.

Of course, as was stated earlier, nothing tops the mega supermarket - WEGMANS.
There’s too much good food at and around Rochester!

The new stereotype for U of R food is SUBSTANTIAL Improvement.

oh yeah! We also have “The Meliora” restaurant, which offers sit-down dining during lunch hours 5 days a week.

If you want full meals consisting of fresh fish, steaks, chicken, vegetarian options, pastas, sandwiches, soups, salads, etc. go here!!! I unfortunately didn’t even eat here until my senior year (I liked Danforth, Douglass, and the Pit too much to even realize it’s existence)

This restaurant is right above the UR Bookstore, no tipping required! This will become a tradition between you and your group of friends to go at least once a week.
