Football and Admissions

I am a high school junior and very much interested in a career as an Officer in the United States Army. I have given it careful consideration (as much as any 16 year old can) and am committed to obtaining that goal. I have looked at my options, which include USMA, VMI, The Citadel, ROTC, and Valley Forge (2 year Early Commissioning Program). I know the road to being admitted at USMA is difficult, but that the rewards for a career Officer would be greatest for a West Point graduate.

One problem is that my current GPA is only a 3.2 unweighted I made a couple of C's my freshman year. I have taken several honors classes, but no AP classes. My SAT is 1340. For EC, I have been on the Science Team for two years and lettered in football this year and will play again my senior year. I am also a Cadet in the Civil Air Patrol and active in my church.

If I can perform well enough in football to get recruited by USMA does anyone think my GPA would be acceptable?

justinl: While GPA is important, I think USMA will look at your most recent classes and see how you are performing. Also most of the postings here have concurred that SAT performance is probably weighted more heavily by USMA than GPA. With a 1340, I think you are in pretty good shape academically.

If you think you can improve on that score, I recommend you retake the exam shooting for a 1400.

Good luck.

assuming your SAT is out of 1600, that is good. as aspen said, you have plenty of time to raise it. i would suggest focusing on the math a little more but both can be raised.

i also strongly suggest not just extra curricular participation, but leadership roles in those. When i had my interview on saturday for the nomination, they really wanted to ask questions about my leadership roles and how i developed as a leader through them etc.

Thanks for both replys. I was hoping to advance in the Civil Air patrol to demonstrate leadership, but football takes up so much time during the training and actual season. Plus this year we went deep into the playoffs. So I'm not able to put in as much time as the others so I miss out on promotional opportunities. I'm retaking the SAT at the end of January and will do one of those SAT prep programs to help boost my score. I am in Advanced Algebra / Trig now and will take Calc my senior year. I hope that can boost the math score.

JustinL,

I will also suggest that you take the ACT. Many students find one of the exams easier than the other. There is a possibility that you will find the ACT is a good exam for you.

Good luck! And keep up the good work and planning.

JustinL - look into Norwich University, too - it's smaller, but it's a uniformed campus like VMI or Citadel (it's in Vermont).

being in calc will not help you with the SAT I math. its all basic stuff. the important trick to getting above 700 is the attention to detail. I always make stupid mistakes and it always hurts my score. read everything very carefully (except the directions, you should already know what they say).

Good tip taffy and I will take a look at Norwich Marmidilo. We also have a small college in the hills of North Georgia that is uniform, but they don't have a football team and would really like to play if at all possible. But getting the type of education I need is most important so I will try to go there if all else fails. And Momoftwins, I will take your advice and take the ACT to see how well I do on it.

My son is a football player, too. We visited TAMU and North Georgia as well as considering VMI and Norwich - our opinion NG has the best ROTC program. If WP doesn't come through that is where he will be attending. By the way, they do have rugby and soccer.
