Football recruiting continues to impress

We are not even in the fall (heck, we are barely in the spring!) and we already have 15 verbal commitments. Considering the quality of those recruits, Michigan is pretty much guaranteed a top 10 class, potentially a top 5 class if we can close strong. Below are our current commits:

QB Shane Morris, 6'3", 190 LBS, 5 star (Scout), 5 star (Rivals)
FB Wyatt Shallman, 6'3", 245 LBS, 4 star (Scout), 4 star (Rivals)
WR Jaron Dukes, 6'4", 200 LBS, 3 star (Scout)
TE Jake Butt, 6'6", 230 LBS, 4 star (Scout, 4 star (Rivals)
TE Khalid Hill, 6'3", 235 LBS, 3 star (Scout), 3 star (Rivals)
OL Kyle Bosch, 6'5", 280 LBS, 4 star (Scout), 4 star (Rivals)
OL David Dawson, 6'4", 290 LBS, 3 star (Scout), 4 star (Rivals)
OL Chris Fox, 6'5", 285 LBS, 4 star (Scout), 4 star (Rivals)
OL Patrick Kugler, 6'4", 280 LBS, 5 star (Scout), 4 star (Rivals)
OL Logan Tuley-Tillman, 6'7", 310 LBS, 5 star (Scout), 4 star (Rivals)
DL Taco Charlton, 6'6", 235 LBS, 3 star (Scout), 4 star (Rivals)
LB Michael McCray, 6'2", 220 LBS, 4 star (Scout), 4 star (Rivals)
DB Dymonte Thomas, 6'1", 180 LBS, 5 star (Scout), 4 star (Rivals)
DB Gareon Conley, 6'2", 170 LBS, 4 star (Scout)
DB Joudan Lewis, 5'9", 160 LBS, 4 star (scout, 4 star (Rivals

According to Scout.com, Michigan has four 5-star and seven 4-star commits

According to Rivals, Michigan has one 5-star and eleven 4-star commits

The key question now is, how many spots do we have to fill this year. We recruited 25 players last year, so I assume we will have a smaller class this year. Anyone know how many more verbals we can accept at this time? We definitely need a coupe of RBs (Ty Isaac or Justin Davis would be nice), a couple of WRs (Marquez North, Darrell Daniels are very good), a couple of DL (Eddie Vanderdoes and Manning would be great) and a couple of DBs (Su'a Cravens, Priest Willis, Vernon Hargreaves III and Kendall Fuller would all be awesome).

If a Spartan referred to themselves as “Michigan” would you be outraged? What if the “directionals” used just Michigan? On the other hand, did Paterno coach at Penn?

Your coach calls the Buckeyes of O$U, OHIO instead of O$U or Ohio State. Totally disrespectful of OHIO, in Athens. One of your esteemed law professors should head over to the stadium office and straighten the coach out. The professor can explain the copyright battle the Ohio State University and Ohio University had over the use of Ohio. With the Ohio Bobcats winning the battle.

Sure hope your student athletes are not confused when they walk on the floor Friday night and they do not see a team wearing scarlet and gray but are fighting for their tournament lives against the team in green and white OHIO BOBCATS.

It is disrespectful because your coach hasn’t walked a mile in the shoes of the Bobcat athlete who works just as hard as any Wolverine but may have slightly less God given talent/body and is constantly overshadowed by a team in Columbus. Start calling teams by their correct name Coach and give respect, after all, the MAC was a stepping stone to your current position and you make yourself look odd with your slight on another institution.

[Michigan football coach Brady Hoke says ‘Ohio’ not disrespectful to Bobcats; won’t stop using it](Michigan football coach Brady Hoke says 'Ohio' not disrespectful to Bobcats; won't stop using it)

GCHornet, your post is well taken, but not relevant to the thread. Besides, I am not sure this topic is protest-worthy. It is obvious that Hoke means no disrespect to the Bobcats. Why should he. Michigan never plays Ohio University in Football. There is no rivalry of any sort between Michigan and Ohio University. Of course, this could change if the Bobcats beat us on Friday!

It is clear that Hoke only wishes to pound the importance of the rivalry with OSU into his players. He has referred to OSU as Ohio since he was a kid, if only to tick off his Buckeye friends. Whether or not his approach works remains to be seen, but I do not see the controversy.

Alexandre - we are hearing 20 to 22 total recruits, meaning only 5-7 spots remain. They are targeting 1 - TE, 1 RB, 2 WR, 2 DT and 1 LB. If they end up with only 5, they are said to be cutting back to 1 WR and 1 DT. Not sure why they are looking for a 3rd TE other than Scott Orndoff, a Wisky TE decommit (after too much of the staff left), is very interested in MI.

At RB - its Ty Isaac and DeVeon Smith they are looking at closest. Smith is a 250 lb, 4.6/one cut battering ram; Isaac of course the 5* they would most like to get. I believe the RB and WR remaining pickups will be the most important. But, shoring up DT is close behind.

GCHornet:

Please don’t be offended. This is just gamesmanship and some fun ribbing used by Hoke to prove to the faithful he gets the OSU rivalry. In the meantime, you should be thrilled that Hoke refers to OSU as Ohio. It brings notoriety to your school that it would otherwise not have. Trust me, not many people have heard of Athens, OH or even know there is an Ohio University. Btw, did you ever see the video of the MMB paying tribute to your OU bobcat mascot? Hint: Look around the 5:00 mark below

Deveon Smith is visiting this weekend and a commit is very very possible. Issac is a high risk high reward guy. His film essentially shows him running through gigantic holes untouched on his way to the endzone. We know he has the speed but we don’t know if he’ll be able to get yards out of plays where not much is there for him. Smith is a big guy who is physical and runs over people. He doesn’t have Isaac’s speed but he’s more of a sure thing to be productive.

According to the recruiting websites I have seen, Smith weighs 200 LBS. Has he gained weight recently?

[Michigan, Ohio State battle for bruising RB Deveon Smith | The Detroit News | detroitnews.com](http://www.detroitnews.com/article/20120216/OPINION03/202160437/1361/Michigan--Ohio-State-battle-for-bruising-RB-Deveon-Smith)

Here is an article by Sam Webb from a month ago on Smith. I must have heard it wrong, he lists him as 215 lbs but still a pro style, downhill rusher suited very well for the Borges/Hoke style, not the Meyer spread. Even though he is from Ohio, he said he grew up as a Wolverine fan.

215 LBS in HS translates to 225-235 LBS in college. That’s definitely bigger than any back we have had in a while. Michigan needs a brusing back that can carry the ball 20-30 times per game. I think given their size, either Issac (6’2", 220 LBS) or Smith (5’11", 215 LBS) fits the bill.

Deveon Smith is on board! That is 16 commits already. With some unimpactful recent departures, we are now hearing 23-34 recruits when all is said and done.

That’s great news. Deveon Smith’s power running will complement Dennis Norfleet’s outside running nicely.

It is amazing that Michigan has already secured a top 10 class. It isn’t even Spring yet!!! With 8 more spots to fill, we could well have the best class in the country when all is said and done. I suspect Michigan will fill those 8 spots with the following:

1 OL (Laremy Tunsil, Ethan Pocic)
1 RB (Ty Isaac, Justin Davis, Derrick Green)
2 WR (Robert Foster, Marquez North, Laquon Treadwell, James Quick, Darrell Daniels)
2 DT (Eddie Vanderdoes, Justin Manning, Greg Webb, Henry Poggi)
1 LB (Michael Hutchings, Jaylon Smith, E.J. Levenberry)
1 CB (Vernon Hargreaves, Kendall Fuller, Chris Hawkins)
1 DB (Su’a Cravens, Prist Willis)

Given how well we have done so far, I can imagine that our coaching staff are only going to fill the remaining spots with top rated players who really want to come to Michigan.

Below is a quick recap of our commits so far:

According to Scout, we have three 5 star commits and eight 4 star commits
According to Rivals, we have one 5 star commit and eleven 4 star commits

QB Shane Morris, 6’3", 190 LBS, 5 star (Scout), 5 star (Rivals)
RB Deveon Smith, 5’11", 210 LBS, 4 star (Scout), 3 star (Rivals)
FB Wyatt Shallman, 6’3", 245 LBS, 4 star (Scout), 4 star (Rivals)
WR Jaron Dukes, 6’4", 200 LBS, 3 star (Scout)
TE Jake Butt, 6’6", 230 LBS, 4 star (Scout, 4 star (Rivals)
TE Khalid Hill, 6’3", 235 LBS, 3 star (Scout), 3 star (Rivals)
OL Kyle Bosch, 6’5", 280 LBS, 4 star (Scout), 4 star (Rivals)
OL David Dawson, 6’4", 290 LBS, 3 star (Scout), 4 star (Rivals)
OL Chris Fox, 6’5", 285 LBS, 4 star (Scout), 4 star (Rivals)
OL Patrick Kugler, 6’4", 280 LBS, 5 star (Scout), 4 star (Rivals)
OL Logan Tuley-Tillman, 6’7", 310 LBS, 4 star (Scout), 4 star (Rivals)
DE Taco Charlton, 6’6", 235 LBS, 3 star (Scout), 4 star (Rivals)
LB Michael McCray, 6’2", 220 LBS, 4 star (Scout), 4 star (Rivals)
DB Dymonte Thomas, 6’1", 180 LBS, 5 star (Scout), 4 star (Rivals)
DB Gareon Conley, 6’2", 170 LBS, 4 star (Scout)
DB Joudan Lewis, 5’9", 160 LBS, 4 star (scout, 4 star (Rivals)

given the vulnerability to injury inherent in those positions. Even having landed Smith, I’d tAke Green or Isaac as well. Still want a 4.4 40 WR threat. After that I’d take 3 DL guys, maybe another DB.
