Both are very popular at my school, the student section for both football and mens basketball sell out every year (approx 8000+ for football, 5000 for basketball). Womens basketball, gymnastics, and wrestling all get huge numbers of students in attendance as well. A wrestling meet against our rival usually draws student section crowds that are as big, if not bigger, than the mens basketball crowd against the same school.

I live in Iowa. I go to Iowa State, Iowa is our biggest wrestling rival. The state high school wrestling tournament finals have been sold out every single year, selling out in early December when the tournament isn't until the end of February.

Perhaps it's because most of the guys wrestling for the two schools are home-grown, hard working Iowa boys, while the basketball players come from Florida or Texas or other big states and don't have the same personal relations with the fans.

I prefer basketball, albeit tailgating is great.

I go to Southern Illinois University - Carbondale, basketball is our main sport, sadly we didn't make it past the sweet sixteen this year, but there is always next year. As it is, we're still better than U of I :-)

Our coach also just got a HUGE raise, he gets $750,000 per season for the next 7 years.

College football isn't very big in New England. The only game that really matters is Harvard-Yale. Other than that, we're all about the basketball.

Hey tennesse, Do you go to UT-Knox? I have tons of friends going there next year. I wanted to go there but I might get distracted by the parties, sports, and gorgeous girls. Instead I'm going to a smaller school in Memphis :p. I still love it too.

Anyways, I love basketball (I keep up with all the stats) but I like the atmosphere of footballs even more (tailgating).

What 'football' are you talking about? If you mean real football, i.e. "soccer", then I'd have to say that real football is definitely far better.

American style "football" is the worst sport ever. It sucks.

Football is a lot better at my school (consistently top 10, largest stadium in country) than basketball (still trying to build self back up, most underachieving team of the past decade). In any case, hockey is much more exciting.

Football FTW! Football is INSANE in the South, esp. our big rivalries against Alabama and Georgia. I love football at Auburn, even though our schedule for the fall sucks ass (South Florida? Really?). Basketball here isn't incredibly popular, mostly because our men's team sucks. The women's team is pretty good, and I know some of the players, but no one really wants to go see them play because they're girls. (I would, but I really just don't like basketball. I think it's boring.)

Football is big down here in the South, like AUlostchick said. I prefer basketball. Football is too much of an environment unto itself. People aren't as fanatical about basketball than Football.
