I know that all the State College motels are booked on football weekends. Does anyone know how far away you have to travel to find a motel room and any suggestions on where?

Hotel rooms in State College require two night stays on football weekends and are triple their cost. They also require a contract and cash. You usually will have to stay an hour away if not but some games are at 12;00, or 3:00 or 8 p.m if that helps. It is really nice to be able to stay and enjoy everything though.

Holiday Inn - Milesburg - about 30 minutes away. Very remote road to get to it. Book early though...very popular. They didn't require a 2 night stay when we were there - but it was pretty pricey for a standard room (about 200 per night).
It's easier to get rooms if you go to a non-conference game (like Temple for example).

Thanks Toneranger.
Now I will have to find tickets somehow.

How about on non-football weekends???
I'm visiting with my D next month to do the campus tour.
What are the preferred places in State College??

Both the Days Inn (State College) and the Atherton Hotel are right off campus. The nice thing about these two hotels is that you can walk onto campus and it is fun to be able to walk through town to check out the eateries, stores, etc. without worrying about parking. Staying at either of these two hotels will give you a real feel for the campus and 'campus' town.

From what I remember, the campus tour originates at the Shields Building. This building is located on the opposite end of campus from town. When you schedule your campus visit, you will be able to download a parking permit which will allow you to park near Admissions (Shields Building). Depending on your arrival schedule, you may even be able to keep your car at the hotel and catch one of the bus loops to Shields.

There are also many other choices near campus, including 2 Hampton Inns, Motel 6, Super 8, etc. All of these are clean and comfortable. However, staying at these hotels will not give you the same flavor of the town as staying at the Days Inn or Atherton.

Thanks Karp...that is exactly what we want to do. Get a feel for the town as well as the school.

The Atherton is a nice place to stay. We were able to get a room for $73 bucks a night (tell them you are visiting the campus and that the website says $73. :). Not a football weekend. We have had luck at last minute on football weekend (for whatever reason) and able to bag a room for one night at about $200. Close to campus. We stayed in Milesburg one night but the ride was remote and forever! The Penn Stater is a newer hotel off by the stadiums and is a nice place to stay. The PSU website has lots of options. Get a map and scope out the towns on the way into PSU and work backward.

I love the Nittany Lion Inn right on campus. Hard to get reservation on busy weekends. (obviously forget football weekend)

As a follow up to my original post, does anyone know best way to try to find one game football tickets to purchase for parents who want to visit for a weekend? When I look at ticket broker sites for the 2008 season they are a fortune.

Well they go on sale to the general public around July - at least try that first.
Although it is possible that the brokers computers will grab them all.
You obviously may have a better chance at a game against a lesser known rival. We bought online from PSU for the Akron game(several years ago), and there were only seats available in the end zone very high up so that was what we got.

I've used E-Bay with very good luck, and reasonable price, as long as it wasn't a "big" game like ND, tOSU, and UMich. I've also made connections on the bwi.rivals.com message boards and they have a ticket exchange message board, too. Also, a lot of the Alumni Assoc chapter web sites have an area where they sell extra tickets, especially the H-burg chapter.
Now that I gave you all my secrets, don't bid against me, please! ;-)

Try 'ticketexchange'. They have tickets that season ticketholders (I think) are reselling through ticketmaster. You can use your credit card and print the tickets out right away. You can find a link to it under 'Athletics and Recreation' and 'Tickets'. What's listed there now is for basketball games, but in the fall you can get football tickets.

cag - oh yes, that is a good one too, I forgot! Usually less than brokers for big games, if available, not a bad price for regular games, and can print out tickets on-line for last minute purchases. Here's the link: OFFICIAL WEBSITE OF PENN STATE INTERCOLLEGIATE ATHLETICS

I’ve used [State College, PA Hotels | Penn State Lodging | Football Hotels, Motel, Accommodations - Lion Country Lodging](http://www.lioncountrylodging.com) for booking football weekend hotels in the past. They have several lodging options close to the PSU campus and usually have some availability. The 2012 football season will be here before we know it! I’d make reservations asap!

Walking from the Days Inn to Shields is almost as far as walking from the BJC and commuter lots to Shields (where your parking permit is likely to put you) and there’s nothing to see on the latter trip. Just park and walk everywhere, town’s not THAT big. PSU requires walking. It just does. Parking and driving are possible, but imho not worth the hassle and you don’t get to see inner campus. And make sure you eat at the Corner Room, or Zola’s, or Hedwigs…

Er, that would be Herwig’s. ;)

^^^red face…shelving books all day…

don’t tell them…heaven only knows what sort of punishment THAT would get me! I only go on a completely growling-hungry stomach so I make sure to clean my plate!!

I won’t tell as long as you repeat, “where bacon is a spice”.

We used to have a B&B about 25 miles from PSU. Prices are still pretty high that far out. You might try Krislund.org. They have motel style cabins with 2 double beds/heat/AC/private baths. Very new. They are about 22 miles north east. Also, if you have a group they have several lodges…No alcohol.
