Foothill & De Anza Colleges?

I am a Canadian student looking into US colleges/universities with cheap tuition fees for international students and came across Foothill & De Anza Colleges in California. I noticed they have a very large international student population and low student tuition fees. That sounds great! Are they well respected and why exactly do they admit so many international students?

Aside from Foothill & De Anza what other colleges in California (and the US for that matter) have cheap tuition fees for internationals along with a good transfer out record? Which of these colleges have particularly good fine arts programs? How is the fine arts program at Foothill & De Anza?

Thanks in advance!

Should let you know De Anza & Foothill are not located in SF. De anza is about an hour away and Foothill 30-40mins from SF. There closer to San Jose more.

And they admit everyone because they’re 2 year community colleges I don’t think they’re allowed to reject anyone?

Wow you are fast. I realized my mistake and quickly went to correct it only to see you beat me to it.

But why do they have such a large international student population? Are they the cheapest in terms of tuition fees?

i’m actually taking classes at both and i don’t know the answers to your questions XD
but the international population at de anza is almost all asian…not really canadian lol, and i think most community colleges have about the same tuition fees? though i’ve never actually looked it up for anywhere else so i don’t really know

^ It’s ok its a common mistake.

I’m not sure on the specific reason, but I’m going to take a shot in the dark. But the large population of international students has to do with the large Asian community in SJ(Vietnamese) so a lot of students head to area because they can live with family. It’s the same in SF at CCSF where we have a large population of international students and many of friends of told me they chose SF because they have family here already.

There a few members on here from Foothill/De Anza who can tell you more, but for SF it’s because of relatives already in the area.

As for fees I have no idea as I’m a Cali resident.

All CCC do have the same fee per unit I believe, but they differ at other fees(health fee, reg fee, etc) and can’t forget parking fees.

oh, while SJ does have a large vietnamese population, de anza’s asians are mostly chinese with quite a few koreans and japanese too, more of a result of cupertino’s demographics rather than san jose’s

^ Ah yeah I don’t know I’m from SF where are International population is mostly Chinese with koreans, japanese and Thai too and the Filipinos.

I would say both Foothill and De Anza are the top CCs in the state with really good transfer rates. Though I live right next to De Anza, I go to Foothill for the Honor’s Program (TAP) for UCLA. I would say that both FH and DA are about the same. De anza is located in the center of Cupertino, much more crowded and urban. Foothill is in Los Altos Hills (a rich suburb), and is less crowded + it has a beautiful campus. I would search up each of the schools catalogs online and see their fine arts department and the classes they offer.

As people mentioned already, the large majority of the international student population come from China. There are a few Koreans, Japanese, Europeans, but the vast majority is Chinese. The main reason FH and DA probably admit so many international students is the money, especially with the budget cuts. Residential students pay like 300-400 per quarter while intl students pay something like 1500-2000.

hows the parking situation at DA? I’m going there for my last quarter, I’ve gone to Canada for the rest and it’s perpetually in a state of construction + overfilled which makes parking terrible.

it mostly depends on the time and location (as in which lot) of course…but in general, parking at de anza sucks, especially for the first few weeks of the quarter

hmm thats a shame, at least I only have class 2 days a week.

just an fyi, there are more to deanza and foothill. although they have high transfer rates, i would consider going to different CC just because classes at deanza are so impacted. i’m part of west valley-mission college and i’d say it’s a little easier to get classes than deanza.

just to make sure
you know that Foohill&De Anza are on quarter system right? Maybe that’s why their tuition looks cheap. Because 2semesters=1year while 3quarters=1year. Most CC in california use semesters.

as for parking in DA, don’t even think about it. Go to foothill if you can: better chance of getting classes u want and parking is hell lot easier.

I drive by de anza all the time and I have tons of friends who go there. There’s a huge international student population mostly because DA is well known for transfer rates and also have a few great faculty members. Also an international student (mostly Asian) won’t feel out of place because it’s located in Cupertino.
However, I’ve heard a lot of my friends complain that they can’t get their classes because it’s been getting so full. Some of them tried to take classes at west valley, but they didn’t really like the atmosphere (they thought the classes were easier though). If I were in your shoes, I’d try both DA and Foothill.

I go to De Anza and will probably go to Foothill in the summer or fall quarter. Not a big fan of international students (I’m Asian, no racial) and De Anza has no UCLA TAP.

I think international students get first dibs on classes because they pay so much more, so the domestic students are the ones who end up getting screwed.

Parking is not a problem at De Anza. Just park in the upper sections of the parking structures and you’ll be fine.

yea, i agree that classes at west valley are easier, but yea, the atmosphere really doesn’t suit me there (though i have friends that go there which is nice), getting classes is difficult though i’ve been able to get good/easy classes every quarter and i’m in my first year (though due to a lot of AP’s i was able to skip many intro and intermediate classes which fill rather quickly), it also helps if you’re in eops, disabled, a veteran, honors club (which unfortunately doesn’t have funding for next year :'[), a senator, and i heard athletes and other club members used to also get priority but i’m not sure if that’s still true since i heard that a few years ago, you can also always take classes at foothill and de anza like me since they’re in the same district which is nice and gives you more options and access to foothill’s tap :]

parkingwise, ridefixed is mostly right, i almost always just go straight to the roof of the flint center which is generally free or more rarely, the small parking lot next to the kirsch center; but the rest of the lots are generally insanely crowded

Lomkh, you mentioned you are in ptk. Are you an officer? I may know you hehehe.
