FOOTHILL: Truth needed!

Dilemma: SHOULD I TRANSFER OUT OF FOOTHILL? I got a double in a suite. I really would like to know more about foothill (intimate details, please!) from people who have lived there, not just more of this hearsay about why “foothill is teh suck because it’s boring.”

I’m a freshman intending a major in Poli Sci. I cannot study if there is any noise anywhere in the immediate vicinity, but I also plan to do most of my studying at the Library.

My parents are willing to pay the extra 3k for Foothill, and think it is better for me (duh; they thought the Units were appalling) but I don’t want to be an additional financial burden.

If I move out, it will be into a Unit double.

I really don’t want to commit social suicide in my freshman year. I am a naturally very social person, so I reckon I could fend my way in foothill but… is it worth it? (I’m already regretting accepting Cal over LA because of my parents touting Berkeley’s reputation, so I feel my dorm should be my decision.)

Are the views of the bay, extra hike (is it really an extra hike), isolation, higher crime rate (as a girl, I’m worried), bigger rooms, and quieter study time really worth it?

Any/all input is highly appreciated!!!

"higher crime rate"--could you explain?
I'm sure you don't want more parental input, but I'm a parent and just found tha overall atmosphere more livable and peaceful at Foothill..the Units seem so...urban, and felt less safe to me...and the coed bathrooms??!! gross!
but those were just impressions...my d still wanted the Units and I was unsuccessful in talking her out of it.

the hike ain't that bad

it's really quiet for the most part, although my crew and i tore it up in foothill all the time and never got caught because the RA's aren't around.

wth kinda crime are you talking about?!?

the hills and view is nice, we used to go up there and toke all the time, very relaxing.

You do need to reach out and find people, cause there's alot of tools who are way too quiet and anti-social up there, but other than that it can be lots of fun.

it's closest to campus and you can get everywhere since its down hill to everywhere (although walking back is a treck) it can provide some awesome times and adventures on the way back from the row and south side (peeing on maxwell field is a glorified tradition in my circles) If you can afford it, it's nice, all the dorms are a rip off though, at least foothill has a private bathroom.

By crime rate, I meant the lack of security at the front (because not everything is indoors) and the overall rate of theft, etc from Foothill (my tour guide said that Foothill was less safe in that way).

distance wise, foothill is actually much closer to campus than the units.
its just that you have to hike up there after classes.
and i don't know about crime rates but i agree that its mostly theft problems.
(one of my friend got her laptop stolen)
but other than that i would say foothill is actually a very nice place to live.
great view, very calm, and more.. umm i would say welcoming and friendly atmosphere? my friends who live up there said that they would miss foothill for sure.

crime problem solved: lock your doors

"By crime rate, I meant the lack of security at the front (because not everything is indoors) and the overall rate of theft, etc from Foothill (my tour guide said that Foothill was less safe in that way)."

As punkdudeus said, lock your doors and your windows (especially if your window looks out onto the streets).

When I toured Foothill, and I got to see both La Loma and Hillside, I thought the people there were both social and chill. There were some dudes playing video games in one of the lounges, there was a group partying in a room, and there were a group of activists. The rooms were BIG and the separate men/women bathrooms with DOORS on the tub showers were way better than unit 1 with the shower curtains. PLUS, it's right across the street from campus, a view of the bay and the campanile, and within earshot of the Greek. No need seeking out a stair climber (!) and right next to a cool forest.

Foothill also has the benefit of the services center for computing, tutoring, printing, etc.

It's going to be as boring and anti-social, or as fun and social as you make it.

i lived in foothill and i can honestly say that my suite was composed of just about the most anti social people you can imagine. i think most suites are like that, but there are many social butterflies in foothill (who probably wanted the units.)

so... as a freshman, dobby, what would you recommend?

I live in Foothill last year, and I loved it. My suite was actually a very social suite. We always had people from other suites over in our suite (studying chemistry, watching 24, etc.), so Foothill (La Loma) isn't all that asocial. Your dorm life will be as fun as you make it.

ccbchunks: how can you guarantee that you can transfer out into a unit double?

the chances of transferring out are low. They give priority to those without housing. Personally though, I lived in Unit 1 and I loved the experience.
