Coming from CA, I have no idea what footwear to bring/buy to prepare myself for Brown. For example, does one wear rainboots in the snow? Are uggs popular? Can you wear running shoes in the rain?

I know this is such a random, girly question but I just want to know in advance!

Many girls wear those rubber rain boots that I hadn’t seen in anything but cartoons until I got to Brown.

However, as a guy, I need basically 4 pairs of shoes-- my Naot sandals (basically Birkenstocks), a pair of sneakers, a black pair of dress shoes, and waterproof “sneakers” (I think you know the type).

Haha, maybe it’s a regional/seasonal/stylish thing. I’ve never seen them when I lived near Philly nor during my time in VA. But, what ever footwear keeps your feet warm and comfortable is the way to go :D!

I have no idea what waterproof “sneakers” are. Crocs? hiking boots? Where I’m from, when our shoes get soaked we just set them out to dry in the sun, because by the time you come inside from the rain the sun’s out and shining. Then you just gotta be careful a scorpion didn’t crawl in there…

Unless you mean barefoot. In which case I’m totally on that. It’ll be nice ot be able to go outside barefoot without burning my feet… though there IS fun to be had from that.

Rain boots now come in many colors and designs. Search for rain boots at target.com to see. I’ve seen them worn by girls on many college campuses.

However, they may not work in the snow – my daughter said they didn’t keep her feet warm enough. It doesn’t snow much in Providence, but when it does it turns into mush pretty quickly, which means crossing the street becomes a challenge in avoiding deep icy mush puddles. The type of puddles that destroy Uggs. My daughter wears fake Uggs, but does own a pair of snow boots. She bought them after her first semester – she survived on rain boots and Uggs until then.

Until it gets cold, flip flops are a popular shoe choice. You can wear running shoes in the rain, and many wear them in the snow too. My daughter wears leather boots a lot – she has several she’s bought at yard sales and thrift shops. I’ve also seen girls walking around in pumps, even in the snow.

Flip flops are always popular, running shoes when it is cold and it is snowing/raining. Dress shoes in case of any formal occasions. Boots if you really want. Honestly, Uggs don’t work unless it is dry outside (sources: lets say I live in a state that experiences all four season and quite a bit of snow/rain)

I’ve been looking for a pair of rainboots to get because I don’t want the hems of my jeans/pants getting all effed up when it rains… however I do plan on living in my flip flops until my feet can’t take the cold anymore. Uggs were popular at my high school in Massachusetts but idk about Brown. I have some sneakers and a pair of clogs that I’m bringing and maybe a pair of heels or flats. We do have basically all of January off so hopefully winter weather won’t be too bad.

Rain (the higher boot the better there are alot of puddles that can splash up and seep into your jeans, if you plan to wear these in the snow get some thick socks)

I was once a pure bred Floridian. Before Brown I had never seen or experienced snow. The snow boots were an excellent investment. On the days that it would rain I would wait for my room mate to come barging into our room super angry. He didn’t have rain boots and his jeans would be wet to his knees! He would become so ****ed off. But you can waterproof some boots that can serve well as snow shoes.

There are not scorpions at Brown, but there are nasty people who will steal your shoes or put things special surprises in them i.e. condoms.

Winter does not stop until about mid April when Spring Weekend pulls its ugly head out of the BSA. Don’t expect to wear your flip flops a lot. Pretty much when December begins and until about March the weather is always below 40 degrees.
