For 2016 ED Applicants

So all throughout the past year I sifted and searched through these forums trying to find useful bits of information. So I’ve decided to fully document my ED journey this year for any curious students going through the archives next year.

February 2010: I visited BC, fell in love did the usual info session/tour

April 2010: Visited/participated in a french class and a modern dance class

August 2010: Interviewed at the school, called to arrange it myself. It was more of a conversation than an interview. My interviewer was an admissions officer and she asked me typical questions like Why Barnard? Why a women’s college? What classes are you taking next year? What are you excited about academically? What do you do for fun? And those are all the questions I can remember

November 2010: Submitted my common app/supplement November 5, 10 days early to make sure everything arrived on time. Even electronically submitted items took about a week to get in and it took me 4 days to get a tracking code from Barnard

December 14 2010: My tracking code works on the Barnard admitted students website at about 4:00 PM EST. This is the same code that was used to track my application, it then worked on my admitted students website. The site that popped up said “Congratulations newly admitted students!” the website then allowed me to submit my response that, yes I wished to study at Barnard for the 2011-2012 academic year and asked if I was interested in on campus or off campus housing. It should be noted that the tracking code thing was probably a mistake as the admissions office would neither confirm nor deny that working tracking code meant acceptance but instead replied with frustratingly cryptic emails. So this bug may be worked out next year.

December 15 2010: My acceptance letter finally arrives, causing great relief, much hugging, and a few tears (and a new facebook status). The letter arrived with the regular mail in the morning and was in a priority mail envelope that looks like this:<a href=“Store redirect”>Store redirect
If that link expires, just google image search ‘priority mail’ the envelope itself is the size of an unfolded letter, rather slim, and is white, blue, and red. The envelope included an acceptance letter, a ‘welcome to barnard’ brochure, a subway map, and I would assume that it also includes finaid package for those who qualify for it.

If there is a 2016er reading this next year, just remember to breathe. You’ll end up in the right place even if that place isn’t Barnard (but I hope it is)!

Aside from the whole does working tracking number = acceptance thing, the admissions office is very responsive and open. Don’t hesitate to email them if you have any specific questions.

Thanks so much for this post! I LOVE Barnard so much, I went to their summer program last year, I’m going to their young women’s leadership institute this summer. I’ve been in contact with the admissions office sice the summer, and am talking to the admission director for my area on monday! I think I may be a bit ahead of schedule, but I just want to go to Barnard soo badly, congrats that you got in!

Also, for those on the cusp that think that they won’t make it: know that there is hope and I truly believe that the admissions counselor looks at the essays first and NOT the SATs and GPAs (though it wouldn’t help if they were good! :D). Just go out of your way to show that you LOVE Barnard and express yourself well. Remember, you are there for them, not vise versa. If you aren’t accepted (though I don’t wish that on anyone!), then they think you won’t be happy there and really, you don’t want to go to a place that won’t make you happy, right? The fact that you’re on CC makes you special. Good luck, all!

agree with rowersmom.
If admissions was based only on SAT scores and GPAs, then I totally shouldn’t’ve gotten in. Just put yourself out there and don’t worry so much.

Just to add: I am rowersmom’s d who just had to say something!

Thanks guys, I’m trying to show Barnard I really want to be there, and hopefully I’ll be able to show that in my essays next year.
