I can think of huge pros/cons to repeating a grade in order to be accepted into boarding school. As somebody who would be applying to be an upper/junior/11th grader (HOWEVER you want to put it lol) many people are encouraging me to consider repeating...

I know that it's a very common practice, but the idea seems rather heartbreaking for me... I mean, where I come from, repeating is NOT a good sign. I have great grades, and participate in school extra c's, but want to seize this chance to go to such a great school. I just need to know what you guys think of repeating, how you handled watching your friends leave while you stayed in high school, and etc...

Thanks, everybody. I'm sorry for posting 48723 times, I'm just a wide-eyed student, and overly curious lol.<3

Yeah I was thinking about that last night, and talking with my Mom about it.

It would be reallllllly tough to see your same-aged friends drive off to Uni. while you walk back to your dorm, but I also think we wouldn't be the only Lowers that aren't 15. I'm sure we'd meet many kids in the same situation.

Bottom line, I don't wanna have to make that decision! lol...
I just want to get accepted, and attend 11th grade as a 16 year old. I suppose the whole 'repeating' would especially come up at schools that aren't need-blind... and Exeter is! Phew.

Wait, what? You turn 16 this year, but you're a sophomore?
Where I live, girls in grade 10 are 15, turning 16 in 2009. I actually know a girl who was born on January 1st - must suck to be SO close to being a grade ahead.

Im one of the youngest..but I almost never thing about it. Its really a lot more about maturity...If EVERY single one of the schools I apply to require me to repeat. Then I would be forced 2..if not I cant see myself doing it.

Probably more because of when everyone's graduating ill only be a senior..

I'm not going to repeat, not for my friends, but as horrible as it sounds, although I love learning, I'd really just like to finish up with high school and move on. I'm contemplating, if I stay where I am instead of going to boarding school, graduating early, so waiting an extra year isn't even an option.

i would NOT repeat freshman year (that would be what i repeat should i have decided that) becauseee:
a) repeat FRESHMAN YEAR? this is hell enough.
b) money!
c) i don't enjoy learning the same things again
d) i worked my ass off this quarter for college and boarding apps, they aren't gonna go to waste.
e) it feels sad to spend 5 years in high school. unless you're postgrad, which is cool, and it's not exactly "high school" it's like "precollege"

Typically, I do not recommend repeating a grade as so much can be accomplished during summer breaks to advance one's college prospects. Often, however, students applying to ultra-elite boarding schools repeat a grade to increase their SSAT scores in an effort to enhance their chances of getting into a top tier boarding school. The SSAT, which is completely unrelated to the SAT, grades testers only against students of the same sex & grade. Thus a student can significantly raise his or her score by agreeing to be graded, or even regraded, against a lower class.

Swiss no one asked me too..I dont see hwy they would. Im 15 now in 10th grade..but I was 14 until late september in 10th grade..

You wouldn't know it if you ever met me tho..no one believed me in my school when I said I was only turning 15...I would only repeat a grade if I reeealy wanted to go to one school and they said u can come but you have to re-do 10th...I'd consider. My parents wouldnt like it tho.

There is absolutely NO stigma to repeating a grade to enter a boarding school. The classes are different and challenging. Colleges actually like to see the more mature students. It also gives you more time to form relationships with the counselors and teachers who are going to be writing your recs for college applications and to explore areas of study that interest you.

I understand that... I just want to graduate in '11... it does look better, I just feel really sad about it. The people applying to these schools have worked very hard in their public schools and beyond to make these great grades, and it just bums me out, the thought of having 5 years in high school. Just my input :]. I want to be convinced otherwise, but more than that, I want to make it in junior year.

^ Same here, regardless of it not being a negative thing for college, it would be a negative thing for me (especially since I would, without doubt be one of the oldest in the class.) I don't feel comfortabel with the idea for me. Anyone else, go ahead. I'd rather go as a junior.

Most of the information that is being posted sounds like poorly researched opinions... My hotchkiss interviewer told me he repeated and he loved it(After I asked him what he would do when he asked me if I would repeat). He talked about the whole process and how he felt ect.

He said that I would NOT be studying anything that I would have already taken... 100% new and fresh material(Junior and Senior courses). I mean, lets just say I could get 1/4 of college out of the way at Boarding School and maybe take a term abroad?

If I was a year younger I would totally do it, but now... I don't really know.

italianboarder how do they put it when they say that? Are they saying your in the school but we would like you to repeat..or your in the school if you can confirm to us your willing to repeat?

IF you are some insane beast athlete or someone that might have trouble adjusting to boarding school life or if you just simply want to you need to say on your application that you are a 10th grader applying for the 10th grade.

Hotchkiss interviewer said why not repeat, lacrosse(He is the coach also...) and math(Said I could finish Calc my sophmore year and then take advanced economics and theoretical math classes). Basically, he said I could also take a term abroad and not be as constrained to meet credits.

They won't tell you in march(decision letters) that you are in if you repeat and out if you don't. That is what Exeter and Hotchkiss told me was the norm for all schools.

As for Itallian Boarder, I've actually read all of that.Personally I couldn't do it. Oe more year is too much for me. Although I do love to learn and am searchig for the challenge. There are more things I'm looking at, that I can' rech in high school. I know ne year isn't much, but also I wouldn't, personally, feel comfortable being the oldest in my class.

If you're younge thogh, and don't mind the extra year I can see how it would be a great advantage. You'd get to blend in better with the school and take more classes.

Ya it owuld be cool for the blending into the school better...but not my preference. Im "young" in age for my grade but that really means nothing. Freshman are like little kids..actually half the people in MY grade I think are a little to immature. Its more aobut maturity level than age I think

Repeating would just cause to many complications in my opinion...to much explaining to relatives and stuff lol. I have a really competitive family..where everyone goes to IVYs and crap. My mom wouldn't like trying to explain the situation..they'll just think I'm stupid either way. It has its positives and negatives I guess.
