For all those deferred, from a previous deferee...

Hey guys, I haven't been on CC for a while, but now that I'm home for Christmas break, I finally have some time.

I was deferred last year, and then accepted in the spring. So, I know what it feels like. The majority of EA applicants are deferred, so don't feel bad. You can always send in extra stuff and have your GC's bug the hell out of the admissions office. But mostly, remain optimistic.

If any of you have specific questions about being deferred or about Harvard in general, you can message me.

Good Luck!!!

and congrats to all those who got in.

did you send updates to your application?
and if you did, when did you send them (like jan or end of feb; when is it too late?) and did you rewrite an essay or send something else extra?
I don't really know what to do or send, and my GC won't be calling anybody either...
also, did you change something in your app for your regular colleges? I wish i knew if there was something I could learn from the deferral and fix in my other apps.

and thanks consoling deferrees during your vacation :)

twochickens,

i sent them an update in late jan/early feb. but i didn't rewrite an essay or send in anything extra. and, i didn't change my apps and i got into 10 of my 11 schools.

enjoy your holiday break,
hotpiece

umm. how the hell do we find out who our admissions officer is?

thanks. but, wait... by an update do you mean a short letter? In a short letter, I read you could include your latest grades, awards, and that harvard is your 1st choice. Is that really it? Did you have a new award that probably influenced your app? And, how short or long is an update? And, did you get another interview?

neutralnike,

i have no idea how to find out who your admissions officer is. like i said, my counselor called on behalf of me. so i don't know how he did it.

twochickens,

my update was less than half a page. i told them about my national merit finalist standing and some local awards li had won. i think i wrote a sentence or two about how harvard was my first choice. and that's all i did. i didn't get a second interview.

Do you think I should send in a resume where my ECs and awards are described more fully? The little chart thing on the Common App doesn't really tell of the significance of my EC's or awards. Thank for answering questions, by the way.

hotpiece101,

What was your first semester at Harvard like? Good, bad, fun, boring, cool people, lame people?

primeminister,

that list couldn't hurt.

Hazhulkhen,

i absolutely love harvard. i didn't think i would like it that much, but its super fly. the people are amazing and great and have done all kinds of cool things. harvard is such an experience, that it's sorta hard to explain.

hotpiece

I appreciate hotpiece's post. A year ago, my decision on admission to Harvard was postponed until April and I a) was devastated and b) was devastated that I had 10 other applications to do. Don't worry about it. You will survive, and you will find an amazing college that will offer you a bed next year, maybe or maybe not Harvard. Just take deep breaths, try to focus on who you are and what kind of a person you want to convey in your apps and writing sample, and get them done. Once the RD deadlines pass in a week or two, you will be able to go back to being relatively relaxed about life, back to being amazing students at your HS, and back to being able to hang with your family and friends. Getting the apps out of your hands = immediate relief. Don't worry about Harvard. Forget about it for a bit; you've been thinking about it for the past few months. Go out on some dates with other colleges and see what you find. Harvard will still be there when you get back, and you can deal with Harvard after the new year.

Hey hotpiece,
I was wondering about the rough number of deferral admits...is it like 10-20 people, or is it more like 60-70 people or maybe even more? Sorry if this is a random obscure statistic. Thank you.

achilles,

i heard that there are 200 deferral admits.

hotpiece

Hotpiece, does only GC have right to call ad com to ask about me or can I call and ask?
Have you ever heard any student who got the answer from calling?

zzibuya,

i'm sure you can call and ask. i just wouldn't know who to tell you to call. my GC knew people in the office. so, if you know who to contact and you feel more comfortable doing it yourself, then go for it.

hotpiece

hey thanks hotpiece...200 is quite a lot :)

yup, 200 out of 1275 (gotten by 2150 - 875) = 15.7% ; not too bad

but I still feel a rejection coming

200 seems like a lot, but out of how many? About how many people are deffered each year?

200 from about 3000 (after subtracting accepted people) thats less than 10%
