what are really good areas of study that Duke is known for

Literature for one

Within Duke, we have a few particularly strong departments - how well they're known outside is unclear to me, but here's a few of our biggest departments:

Economics (this is our biggest dept)
Political Science
Biology (all areas: ecological, organismal, biochemical, genomic)
Public Policy (may be diminishing slightly, esp. as econ grows in prominence and pubpol tries to find its own "niche")

Adding on,
Religion
English
Biological Anthropology/Primatology
Biomedical Engineering
Classics
Environmental Science
Math
Medieval Studies

With the changes to the BA, I doubt econ is going to get any bigger. But PPS is trying to limit their numbers too.

Biomedical engineering! I knew I was forgetting something.

Yes, of course, our BME department is incredibly prestigious.

How is Comp Sci dept?

bluedevilmike, I applied to the BME program for exactly that reason, lol.

How competitive is entrance into the engineering school? I applied there and received a call and an email from an admissions officer asking me to switch my application for admittance to the trinity school because i was a stronger applicant for that than the engineering school. i complied, naturally.

how is the engineering scool ranked by the way? ne1 know if it is in the same league as the cornell or MIT, or not even close?
