For all you OOS engineering students

What other schools did you turn down to attend the UIUC engineering school with the out of state tuition rate ??
Was it worth it to pay that much for a state school ??

My daughter rejected U. Mich, Cornell, and Iowa State (full ride offer) to go to Illinois. It was a tough decision as out-of-state tuition is very steep. We had lots of discussions and "pros and cons" lists--ultimately it came down to choosing a top level engineering school that was a reasonable distance from home ( we live in Iowa). She is a chem E major (currently a sophomore), is enjoying her classes, has made lot of good friends, and we haven't regretted the decision. We just say a collective "ouch" when the tuition bill is due.

It might sound unbelievable, but my friend turned down MIT and Stanford for UIUC ECE, and he's out of state from Maryland. He's currently a grad student at Stanford.

UIUC's out of state tuition is about $21,000, while Michigan charges $29,000 and Cornell $31,000! JustAMom, did you not receive any financial aid at all even for Cornell?

wow MIT AND STanford? did he get full ride to uiuc or something?

Our daughter received a $3000 merit scholarship from Illinois, and an additional $2000 leadership award during her second semester there. No financial aid offers from the other schools (except Iowa State). She will be working with one of the chemE professors during the upcoming semester on a research project, and has an internship offer for the summer with a well-known corporation. So, I do think Illinois is offering her excellent opportunities for advancement.
