I know this has been asked a billion times, but i have yet to hear ONE good answer. What is a average sat subject test score for northwestern? Also what is a good one. Can any current undergraduates tell us theirs? 2 I'm specifically interested in are Math II and US History.

bumumumumump

My kid got 740 on Math II and US History.
790 on another Subject Test (one of the sciences).

There’s almost no published data anywhere for individual colleges.

I’d expect at most to find median SAT 2 scores (for all tests offered) generally parallel median SAT 1 sectional scores (e.g. somewhere in the neighborhood of 730 at Northwestern).

What would be two good SAT subject tests to take for a McCormick (computer eng, applied math) or WCAS (math, econ, physics) applicant?

Obviously math would be one appropriate subject to take - s/ one take math I or math II? don’t know any thing about SAT tests , just ACT tests.

don’t take math 1. I think it might almost be a joke for these good schools. It is like the ACT math test I think. The sat math 2 is way harder. It tests into precal and trig and I think a little into Calculus, just limits though. Its not too hard though.

thanks for the input on math. any suggestions for the other subject course that would fit NU?

If you’re applying WCAS, it doesn’t really matter which Subject Tests you take.
If you are applying to McCormick, I would recommend Math II and either chem or physics.

(note: I took the SAT IIs in 2005, so I don’t know what changes have recently been made)

Math I is a death trap. I got one wrong and wound up with a 750. At the same time, I got a 800 on Math II and when I took it anything less than 4 wrong was a 800. I would check the curves because even though Math I material is a lot easier, the math II curve is (as of 2005) far more forgiving.

I 750’d US History.

So my point is this - SAT II scores are taken in context. Since they are not reported by the university in any meaningful way or part of USNWR ranking, they are truly a tool for admissions to determine the quality of the applicant. I think SAT IIs can confirm or challenge a pre-existing narrative. I had strong math grades and a poor SAT. I got a 720 on SAT I Math section, which I knew was not an accurate depiction of my Math ability. So my 5 on AP Calc, 800 on Math II probably helped put my 720 in a different context.

Those who have debate backgrounds should not get less than a 720 or so on a History exam because it would challenge the narrative that you would be a good Poli Sci/History/Int’l Studies student. Science kids who are pre-med should get “high” SAT IIs in Bio/Physics/Chem because it would underscore the narrative. Particularly those who dont take the ACT have no way of showing their science knowledge besides AP tests and grades in science classes in HS. The SAT II in science subjects offers another metric

My strategy was to buy a prep book for every SAT II I could conceivably do well in. I took 2 full-length practice tests in each subject. I then made a decision on which I should take. While you certainy can (and should!) improve your SAT II scores from taking them cold, the improvement probably won’t be too much. High school curricula are similar to what the SAT II tests. So if you are a strong math student, then you should do well on the Math II even if you take it cold. If you already took an AP Science, you better be able to roll out of bed at 8 AM and knock that SAT II out of the park.
