I want to major in English, with concentrations in journalism and creative writing, and I am at a total loss about which college to pick for it. Skidmore or McGill? While I'm here, I might as well throw in Emerson, which has a program called "Writing, Literature and Publishing". Any ideas?

Have you already been accepted to these schools or are you just thinking about where to apply next year?

I've already gotten into both. For McGill, I got wait-listed for the Faculty of Arts but into the Faculty of Environmental Science, so I would have to transfer to Arts after a year.

I know Skidmore has strength in the arts, but I don't know about any particular strength in journalism. If you can get or have gotten (either hard copy or on-line) the curriculum or catalog for both schools, compare the depth and breadth of classes between the two colleges in your areas of interest. One is in a city and that might sway you one way or the other (I have two sons, one of whom refused to look at anything in a city and one who won't look at anything NOT in a city). So, courses aside, you'd need to resonate to the environment and the size of the school and on that both of these differ greatly. Both excellent choices.

Skidmore is known for their English and Writing departments, I believe. My daughter visited the Skidmore area and loved it. I am an Emerson graduate (years ago) and when it comes to getting jobs in the field...Emerson's connections seem incredible. Because Emerson is strong in performance arts and media, they seem to be able to find a way to take your interests and link them to a profession...not bad in this competitive field. Just my thoughts. It's also in Boston...which is pretty fun.
