For Any Past or Current NC State Applicants

Okay so I’m a high school senior who recently applied regular decision to NC State. This may sound like a very ignorant question but I just don’t recognize what people mean when they say they submitted a personal statement when applying to NCSU. I don’t recall doing this and would highly appreciate if someone could kindly explain to me what this is and how I can do this. Also, will it raise my chances of being accepted? I chose “Undecided” as my major, was this a bad decision considering I’m not a top senior in terms of academics.

My son submitted a personal statement that outlined the extent of his non-academic work since it was a big part of his life- he spent many hours in theater and did Robotics plus self-studied for CLEP exams and had a part time job, the Common App doesn’t let you showcase all of this that well, so he submitted a bulleted resume showing just how involved he was in school during his four years in addition to performing well academically. We feel this really showcased him and he actually got top scholarships at the other two schools he applied to (NCSU seems to suck at scholarships so we are not hopeful) but he got the Pisgah Scholarship at UNC Asheville and the Pegas Gold at UCF and I think the personal statement really made a difference for those scholarships and his EA acceptance since they could really see what kind of student he was outside of his grades.

Thank you for the response. I read that the personal statement was just another way of referring to the essays. It sounded pretty ignorant to ask but where I live, we never refer to them as personal statements so I was confused. What do I do if i’d like to send more information about me? Like would I just send the undergraduate’s office an email?

It was submitted in the Common Application as part of the application. I don’t know if you can edit the application now. There was a spot that said, write personal statement.

@parentofastudent My son got the Pisgah scholarship to UNC Asheville as well. Can I ask if it was just $1,000/year? I wasn’t sure if that was just the amount my son got, or if that is the actual amount everyone is offered if they get that scholarship. It isn’t enough to sway us for sure, but it is a nice (albeit) chunk over a 4 year span.

He has just sent in his application to the Honors College program at UNCA and we are waiting to hear.

He was just going to say no to UNCA but all of this is making him rethink. He said tonight that he may be choosing Asheville. He loves theater and for a class he chose to look up and report about the theater program at UNCA. He liked what he saw.

He says he does NOT want to major in theater, he just wants to be involved (as he is in HS) and maybe minor in it.
