hi everyone
i am going to be going to berkeley next month, and i created this thread for us have a support network as we transition. this time has been confusing, scary, but at the same time exciting!

go bears!

does anyone know when 2005 admission stats are out??

i would like to transfer to ucb with a political science major. can you guys tell me what your gpa and such were and what kind of thigns did you write on your personal statement? thank you.

For my personal statements, I wrote about why I wanted to study English Literature (Question # 1), a charactertistic/experience I could bring to UC (Question # 2) and for the free write (Question # 3) I wrote about my decision to leave a high school I excelled at, and enroll in an indepdent studies program, where I graduated very early.

great to see that people have responded!!
hi lizzie bear, i am also mling; we talked the other day for awhile on AIM.
hi suzzieq hi easy mack hi RKATC.
i am a psychology major, and i will be living in unit one. my freshman sister will be going with me as well.
what has everyone been up to this summer?

iAMAPPREHENSIVE, my GPA was 4.0 and for my personal statements, i wrote about the following:

personal statement (600) words-- i wrote about how i chose to overcome the abuse from my parents and how i recovered from eating disorders about 3 years ago. (my sister wrote about another perspective in her personal essay about this as well--she recounted about how she refused to have a relationship with me for years because i was the one who stood up to my folks to try to get them to stop hurting us. in her eyes while growing up, i was the one who upset the family balance and my parents always told her that i was the cause of every problem in the household.)

field interest essay (250 words)-- i wrote about my high school program assistant teaching job i had since i was 18. ( i am 21 now) i wrote about an example of how i used psychology as a tool to help boost performances, and how that inspired me to pursue my degree in my area.

contributions essay-- i wrote about how i learned from different voices through all the different things i took part in. it was literally a "voice" collage.

you know....this gave me an idea...im gonna make a thread offering to send people my personal statements...since it can be helpful.

before i start the thread or start sending my personal statements....i would like to know what you all think. i would like to help people, but at the same time, i am worried about people using it and passing it off as theirs.

Unimpressive gpa of 3.58 by spring semester for a Chem major in College of Chem. For Q1 I wrote that I want to be a professional Chemist and I showed interest in this area by working at my cc's Chem storeroom. I also wrote about what I learned from this job and and that I have a better understanding of my future as a Chemist. In Q2 I chose to write about the rifle shooting competitions I competed in. I learned discipline, patience, and perserverance from training these competitions and wrote about how I applied these qualities toward my academic pursuits. Finally for Q3 I had to address gaps in my college career and why it has taken me so long to transfer. Also I had to explain patchy academic performance which happened way too long ago and that I've matured a lot since then. Basically I wrote about the devotion to my academic and professional goals and my determination to graduate and not screw up again. :) Then, as some of you know, I had to beg them to accept me in an appeal letter. Well, if you ever get to the appeals process I'll let you know what I wrote. :)

Personally, I wouldn't send my personal statement to anyone other than admissions (not that it's that great :)) It would be a better idea to help others out by offering a brief summary of the essay instead. Or better yet give suggestions on what to write about and what not to include. Ultimately, it's your essay and you should do whatever makes you most comfortable.

It's never too early to start drafting your personal statement. I wrote most of mine during the Summer vacation last year and boy, was I glad I did that. When the Nov 30th deadline comes around, profs always seem to want to have exams then. The last thing you want to do is to put a rush on the personal statement/application.

thank you lizzie bear for the compliment :) it really touched me :) that was an extremely hard essay to write...

before i forget, i need to learn how to quote things on this forum. how do i do that?

hey suzzieq if you dont mind my asking, how old are you? and i've always wanted to learn how to shoot rifles...i go to shooting ranges to shoot handguns, but i haven't shot a rifle yet. i think it is neat you used to compete. what got you into it?

and yes, get started on at least thinking seriously about your personal statement, and do little things when you have time. i waited until nov 1st to get started on mine, and luckily i had the semester off, so i was able to focus on it. but then i had to rush my two 250-word essays because i took so long on my personal 600 word one. so yeah....get started !

okay. i tried to show you how to quote but i just kept doing the action, without being able to explain it because it would automatically quote something. ahhh.

Hmmm, eeek, I'm old. I'm 26 but I look like one of you guys :) I got into rifle shooting when I was in Singapore (where I grew up). I was in high school when I joined one of those groups sponsored by the army. I was trained to shoot a simple air rifle, a .22 bolt action rifle, and the AR-15 rifle (yeah, live rounds). I also have experience with a 9mm and a 357 magnum, but not at a shooting range though. I used to go to Louisiana and just go to the bayous and fire a few rounds at floating logs and tin cans. I miss shooting :(
