How does one learn the German and French required for Ph.D. programs? It seems like an awful lot, learning Latin, ancient Greek, German, AND French in just 4-5 years.

Most of my fellow Classics majors took at least one of the languages in high school, so it cuts down some (I took German). Remember that grad programs only want reading knowledge of German and French- basically, all you have to do is be able to translate scholarly articles with a dictionary. You don't really need to be able to speak or write them, although that would be helpful.
