...participate in an SAT-based summer program (i.e., Duke TIP) or get a summer job?

There’s no right/wrong answer. Many kids who don’t have a choice to attend an SAT based program and for financial reasons must work – do just fine in overall admissions.

If you feel that SAT prep could help, then fine. If not and your job looks to be fun, then go for that. You need to see what YOU need, not how others will look at it.

i would go for the job

Admissions are based on SAT scores. However, the courses themselves don’t pertain to the SAT.

I looked at the HYP applications and one of the question is what you did 2 previous summers . So if prepping for SAT looks ok to you then go ahead.

Either a program like Duke TIP or a job could be impressive – if you’re following your interests or requirements (such as if you are working a job in order to help your impoverished family).

you obviously didn’t read post #4

yeah I missed that post. I just read his first post

ok, thanks for the input.

If it makes a difference, both the job and the summer program would be for personal gain…

Do whatever you want to do the most. Since it seems that you aren’t in dire need of money from a job, then pick whatever option would make you feel most fulfilled. Just keep in mind that those Talent Search programs fill up very quickly, so if you’ve got the paperwork already, send it in.
