For Cornell University in Particular: Laptop vs. Desktop

A laptop has little utility in math classes or sciences classes simply because there's no way you can keep up with the lecture having to draw molecules or mathematical symbols. For something like history lecture, they may be a little more useful in taking notes.

That said, through 1 1/2 years of Cornell, I've seen 4 people take their laptops to class (this is out of the thousands of students I've had class with). I do have a laptop simply because it's easier to take home and I do take the laptop occasionally to the library.

If you get a tablet PC you can draw your molecules and math symbols...

Taking your laptop to class is totally up to you, but aside from classes you can use your laptop in many ways: if you have a class presentation you can hook it up to a projector for your powerpoint slides, you can take it to group meetings, use it at the library or a coffee shop, take it home with you during break, lay in bed and write a paper, and on and on. It is way more convenient to have a laptop than desktop because of the portability. The speed has improved so much that you will probably lose very little productivity.
