the above link is a story about a Wake Forest university student recounting the racism he endured at Wake Forest.

I am wondering and asking current and former students at Rice (preferably a racial minority) to speak about Rice and the racial situation at Rice. I'm guessing Houston has a large black population. But how is it there? Has anyone experienced racial prejudice at Rice?

Rice was ranked #11 for “Lots of Race/Class Interaction” on Princeton Review, whereas Wake Forest was ranked #7 for “Little Race/Class Interaction.” Those rankings are actually pretty accurate, so look them up. From what I’ve heard, Rice is an extremely diverse place; I’m Asian and applying there RD.

Rice is incredibly diverse, and you’ll see all kinds of interactions. There’s definitely a good mix of people and you’ll meet many many many awesome people from all over. I have yet to hear of anything bad in relation to race.

okay so first of all I’m not Asian, but as a current Rice student I think I can offer you a little perspective on life here…because of the residential college system, there’s a TON of interaction between people of various races. I’d say most if not all of the Asians I know freely interact with everyone else. Many of them participate in things like the South Asian Society, which is open to people of all races–there’s very little exclusivity or cliqueish behavior.

The one difficulty some international Asian students deal with is the language barrier, which can make it hard to make friends sometimes. However, there are always other international students and resources available, so after a few weeks to get acclimated, usually I don’t see a problem.

I think the extent to which you want to hang out with only Asians vs. people of other races is completely up to you…there’s no pressure here to do either.

seriously? its called Rice for ****'s sake!

^^ hehe

Im asian (south). I guess Im all for racial humor but I have not seen anything racially offensive at Rice

There’s lots of racial humor, but I have very honestly never seen anyone get genuinely offended, or anyone say something with the intention of offending anyone.
