For Current Stern Students...

Hey everyone,

I have a few questions. Hopefully you guys can help me out. Thanks in advance.

What is the Stern atmosphere like?

I've heard about the "Stern Curve"; how hard are classes?

Do most people live in dorms? And how far are the dorms from Stern?

What do you guys like about it?

What do you guys dislike about it?

What's the night life like?

Do you guys go out at night often?

I've heard that NYU lacks a sense of community. What is your opinion on this?

I'm a current student at McCombs School of Business; is it be easier for a current business student to transfer in general?

Lastly, if you transferred into Stern, what were your stats (high school and college) and when did you apply (freshman year, sophomore year, etc)?

Happy thanksgiving everyone. Have a great one.

Cheers,

i absolutely love stern. sure the classes are hard, people are brilliant, but it's not impossible. i do have to admit that the atmosphere is heavily laden with stress and competition, but if you've made the decision to become a business student, then that's what you should expect. while most people do major in finance, entrepreneurship is getting really popular and they've started opening up more courses for it.

most people do live in dorms although the rent has gone up this year. we pay about $12700/year for "on campus housing". dorms can be as far away as a 40 minute walk or a 15 minute walk but nyu provides buses every 20 minutes or so. i lived at the furthest dorm, walked to school and it was fine. other people who choose not to dorm still live within the same distance.

to be truthful, i don't go out much because most of us have a full course load plus an internship, etc... but that doesn't mean that other people don't. i mean if you can prioritize, you'll be fine. i do have friends who go out for happy hour like every other day.

i feel that out of all the schools at NYU, Stern has the most "community." as long as you make the effort to meet others, you'll find friends. there's business frats that you can pledge for and tons of group projects which help you get to know people.

i have no idea about transferring, although i assume that it's not difficult because there were an influx of transfers this year. if you can afford it, i'd definitely transfer. i've been able to study abroad in two different locations and every junior goes on an all expense paid trip to either europe, asia, or south america during their spring break. no other school does that.

good luck with everything!

I am a sophmore at Stern. Kids are definitely bright. My dad asked if group projects were a pain, because someone wasn't holding up their end of the project. But I haven't found that at Stern. Classes can be challenging. We all have subjects we like and do good at as well as others that are more challening.

I haven't found the stress level to be that much. I keep up with my homework, and stay on top of things. I also work 20 hours/week (work study) so I have some spending and grocery money. I'm living in Union Square, still very convenient to campus.

I love it here. I'll be in Prague from January 17th through May 15th. Woo Hoo!

Thanks for your response. I'll do my best to join you guys, but transferring in will be difficult.
