For current students--Granville Towers and other dorm questions

I got this application to Granville Towers shortly after I was accepted to UNC, and since I was thinking more positively about matriculating at UNC, I thought it would be helpful for me to consider applying for dormitories. So I remembered about Granville Towers, and have few questions:

How does the dorm system at UNC work? Is Granville Towers a private institution contracted by UNC? If I decide not to apply to GT, will I be assigned another dorm by the school at matriculation?

How is life at GT? Is it worth applying now even if I am unsure of matriculating? (Or do I have to wait until I decide to matriculate to UNC in order to apply to GT?)

Is the application a binding contract? (i.e. Do I have to live at GT once I am accepted?)

Is there better places in UNC than GT? What are they?

tomahawk89: Do a search on the UNC forum for other threads on Granville Towers.

Granville is private. If you decide to go with it and don't like it, it's difficult to get back to an on-campus dorm. You can just choose to ignore the marketing, complete the UNC housing forms they send, and you'll be placed in a dorm.

I won't comment on the "life at GT," since I've never lived there, and if you look at past threads on this topic, opinions vary.

The contract with GT is binding for the year, I'm 99% positive. I know someone who moved out after one semester and had to find someone to sub-lease it from her, so she wouldn't lose money.

My opinion-- I think you'll meet more people by living on-campus; this is especially important if you're coming in from out-of-state.
