[For current undergrad students] if you want to know WHY you got in...

Hi guys,
Recently I found a way to get your admission records from the admission office to see WHY you have been favored by AOs among thousands of competitors. After so long doing ECs and staying up late for SAT finally we survived, and we deserve to know WHY. For me, I do not want my year-long effort just turn to 2 minutes on the AO’s table and locked in the file box forever.
Please leave comments or replies if you are interested to see your own record. I will post HOW to get it given lots of people are interested.

Welcome to College Confidential. Interesting first post.

Why would your effort to help be contingent on “lots of people” being interested?

And if this were the type of thing you were encouraged to do, wouldn’t the info be readily available??

I think we’re in dangerous waters here.

This is so 10-months ago! See the link to a USA Today article regarding the Stanford students that first looked into it. It’s a requirement of FERPA. Not sure why OP thinks it’s such a secret.

Because it takes time for me to type and explain how to phrase. There is also risk foreseen for me to post my personal email in which I required my record. If there is not too much people interested, then where is my motivation?

Hi there. I cannot imagine how I can put guys in “dangerous water” by simply asking if they are interested in looking at his/her own record. It is a personal choice to listen to my personal instruction or not.

I am the man who is supposedly going to post private email, although the “welcome” I received is not that heart-warming.

There has been more than one thread on this. Last spring, the colleges were running this through their legal depts. I’ll believe it when I see it.

Some colleges are taking actions, but I believe some have not.

So you haven’t seen your records? Or there is some other angle here? It only applies to matriculated kids and the few tales of where it is possible, it’s generally under supervision, no chance to copy it and share. I believe the college is also allowed to summarize.

I have sent an email to the admission office and they said I can. I have not seen my record since I have not set up a meeting with them, as the record cannot be brought out. I was originally planning to give out the name of my school with the email interaction between me and the admission office. But now I am hesitated to do so.

Yes it may only applied to matriculated students and that’s why I said [for current students only] in the title. Uh maybe I should say “current college students”.

What do you mean by “summarize”?

summarize: meaning they won’t give you access to actual notes – which could indicate private thoughts by individuals

You must be plenty bored at your school. When I was in your shoes, I didn’t give a darn why I’d been accepted. I was too busy having the time of my life.

OP, your college may be open to this. But there’s discussion whether the “educational records” students are allow to see include admissions notes. Or what components. Schools are allowed to destroy admissions records, (as long as it’s not in response to the kid’s request to view them.) Some schools, per policy, don’t share admissions notes across depts. So your request to your registrar may not yield them.

When this first came out, from Stanford kids, the talk died pretty quickly. All the articles at the time were repeats of the same Stanford Fountain Hopper article.

Alright T26E4, I am glad to see you are too busy having the time of your life.

This absolutely inspires confidence that this is on the up and up.

In any event, it never occurred to me to wonder about why I was accepted to college. I pretty much knew why.

Why do lots of people have to be interested for you to describe the process? All you have to do is explain that, according to FERPA rules, students can request their records and mention which office (admissions, registration, etc.) you had to contact at your school to get them. No personally identifying information is necessary and it’s not wise to post your private email on a public forum anyway.

MODERATOR’S NOTE: You are not allowed to post email addresses or solicit PMs. Here’s the sentence from the TOS: “Similarly, please do not post email addresses or solicit private messages or email communications from other members.”

I am closing this thread.
