Dan:

Out of curiosity, do you ever meet up with or seek out the new Tufts freshmen that have been admitted, particularly ones for which you may have advocated? Any funny stories?

Also, does Tufts/the Admissions Office ever invite new freshmen to give their unique views and experiences of the admission process? Might be kind of an interesting discussion.

My D, a freshman, says the one place she never thinks about anymore is Admissions (sorry if that hurts your feelings-LOL). But she does love to talk to visiting students and those she sees on tours, etc. And, of course, she has shown visiting kids from her high school around Tufts as well.

Thanks.

I definitely seek out the folks whose applications I read. This process is a human one, and if you never meet the people on the other side of the paper, it's all too easy to forget that. It's weird to be so impressed with a person you've never met, so meeting the students, and putting a face to the story helps. Plus, it's fun! Occasionally, it gets awkward, especially when I'm super-excited to meet someone and they have no idea who I am. But mostly, it's an opportunity to build new relationships. My second year, one of my Montanan admitted students' families had me over for dinner when I traveled out there, and I got to pick which type of freshly hunted game meat I wanted for dinner.

As it turns out, I love elk.

And last year, I met a number of CollegeConfidential posters/lurkers during April Open House, which was a ton of fun for me. So for any of you reading this who visit Tufts should definitely find me to say hello and let me know what you think. I'm always open to feedback.

In terms of structured sit down with new freshman for feedback, we don't do that, but many of us (myself included) make an effort to have those conversations to be sure we remain honest, relevant, and current to the experience.

Thanks, Dan!! You remain a great comfort, I’m sure, to all those high school seniors interested in Tufts because you are “the human element” in this all too insane process. Tufts, and we on CC, are lucky to have you.
