Is there a difference between deferring to one or the other?
Also, I read somewhere that it’s a good idea to shoot off an email to your admissions counselor why UChicago continues to be a school of interest. Is that still necessary if you fill out the Defer Response Form?
I’m the first in my family to go to college and go through this whole process, so unfortunately, I’m not exactly sure where to go from here, haha.
Were you deferred from EA or from EDI? If the latter, you might have to stay in the regular pool - check the admissions webpage or the directions they gave you with your decision to make sure. If the former, then switching to EDII certainly lets them know 100% that you are committed! Just follow the directions for uploading or e-mailing that and do let your AO know, of course! And of course still let you AO know your continued interest, even if you remain in the RD pool.
I would say just go RD. EDII will be super competitive with a lot of HYPSM defers, and honestly ED isn’t that worth it (I got deferred ED1). Just do RD and put heart and soul into your RD apps.
@friendfiend I am definitely worried about that, to be honest. But on one hand, I’ve also heard that moving to EDII from EA (which I applied) shows commitment and could up chances. But I’m not sure if I want to play my bet on that.
EDII will show commitment and possibly up chances precisely because that ED agreement is a binding commitment. You are telling them that you will go if accepted and will pull your apps from other schools immediately (or when you are notified about your financial aid if applicable). If merit aid is important or you want to be able to choose among a few or several schools, EDII will not be the right choice. However, if UChicago is your first choice and you definitely would attend but are worried about the financial end of it, you should call and speak to FA because they do meet 100% of need and can answer any questions you have about that.
Your parents will need to sign the ED agreement as well as your school counselor.
@friendfiend you do not submit new material once deferred to RD. What you have submitted stands along with your letter of continued interest and updated transcripts.
Switching to EDII is the only way a deferred student can show they are 100% committed to UChicago. No stats were released on this pool size last year.
UPDATE:
Thank you to everyone for their help!
This is a little late to write lol but I did ultimately choose to go with EDII and have sent my letter of continued interest to my admissions officer. Wish me luck!
Also happy new year to everyone! I hope you’ll hear the news you wish for next year regardless of where you apply.
