For double major, primary degree in computer science or accounting?

I'm asking this on the engineering board as well to get two different viewpoints: if I'm interested in eventually working in the business world, probably accounting or finance, is it alright if my degree is an applied science degree with a major in CS and then have a second major in the business field, or is it important to have the business degree versus just the major?

I'm currently a freshman, and my plan right now is to the get the applied science degree and double major in accounting/finance. I feel like the CS degree will really give me a leg up and make me stand out, and I find it pretty interesting; it teaches me how to think. That being said, if my goal is business of some sort, I want to make sure I'm still viable for those types of jobs without a business degree.

Thanks for your input.

Could you clarify what “those types of jobs” are exactly?

The first thing that comes to mind is that if you want to do accounting, you’ll likely want a CPA (required for a lot of the “good” accounting jobs, but it’s possible to do some form of accounting without one), and that would be much easier to get if you just did accounting.

If you want to work in accounting or finance and are not picky about how much you get paid and what exactly you will do, it doesn’t matter what you major in or where you go to college. However, if you plan to work your way up, it’s all about relevant skills and work experience, and if you dip into comp sci, you’ll have to be careful not to get pigeon-holed into coding for the rest of your life.

Work experience and GPA are queen and king, respectively.

It might be easier to get a degree in Accounting or Fianance and Management Information Systems, if you decided you wanted that of course…
