I dont agree with you because you can only apply to one ED school and maybe that's your dream school, not something lower tier that you can apply to regular dicision and get accepted to anyway. This arguement was about applying ED and the chance that people should take instead of giving up and applying to something that they hadn't dreamed about in highschool. If they get rejected from HYP then oh well, now its time to apply to the other schools. If they get accepted well... you know. Please end it here, I dont want this to turn into a one on one.

The problem with your assessment, Kathy, is that you don't have enough information to really determine the OP's chances. Coming from the competitive suburban public school I went to, the OP would not likely be a reasonable applicant. However, if the OP went to a prestigious private school, top 20 % isn't an application killer. At Andover or Exeter, more than 10 % of the class might wind up at HYPSM. That doesn't necessarily mean that those kids were the top 10 or 12 percent, GPA wise. If the OP's "great ECs" are in an area that really makes him stand out, than who knows? Also, since Princeton doesn't consider freshman year grades, if he had a lousy first year, his average might look like a 90 or 92 to the adcoms.

The more serious problem with your attitude is that you seem to be arrogantly sure of your ability to make this assessment without more facts. No one really cares that you don't find the OP's stats "appealing." The adcoms are the ones with the right to decide. To be honest, if I had to bet money on the OP's chances, I would guess that he wouldn't get in. But I can't say that for sure, and neither can you.

To all those who moan about "you stats are NOT good enough for Princeton"

Consider this.

Out of all the kids in my high school, here are the stats for those who got in:

V: 670 M: 760 4.0 gpa/w
V:590 M: 610 3.2 gpa/w
V: 710 M: 700 3.7 gpa/w
V: 780 M: 770 4.3 gpa/w

30 other kids also applied and were denied. 90 percent of them had 4.0s and 1500+s

Three of those kids were some of the most amazing people I have ever met in my entire life.

I'm happy the Ad-coms saw that.

So please, please stop the crap about telling others their scores are too low, because you are obviously mistaken.

Good luck to all those who are applying!

Amen WhiteSox. I think this SAT crap is so stupid.... why does one test mean so much to some people? You study, you try your best, thats what counts. I think Kathy said something about being 'delusional' and crap.... well I'm pretty sure that anyone who posts on here is smart enough to have some good backup schools, I for one am apply to 2 state schools in addition to my other schools which are pretty much reaches for me.

I think the question people need to be asking themselves is

Why NOT me?

Stress is uncool. Peace and love.

It would be ridiculous for any school to base their decisions on SAT scores, as most have acknowledged... I've been told by a few counselors (granted, these are the high school ones, not the fancy paid ones everyone seems to have around here) that the SATs aren't going to make or break your application if they're decent. Yes, they would be a very good tie breaker between two similar applicants. But they're not going to see someone who exhibits outstanding moral character through teacher recs and activities, who was more occupied with volunteering and working than studying 6 hours a week for standardized tests, and who has low SAT scores as an "unqualified" candidate.

In the end, if you've got a decent SAT score, you have just as much a right to apply as everyone else. Then again, everyone has their own opinion on their SATs. Strange how something that was supposed to be so finite and quantitative has evolved into such a subjective issue.

Hmm...on the topic of private counselors...I'm not too fond of them. More like, I hate their guts. It just seems to me that they're taking away the very purpose of education as the great equilizing force. If the rich can pay to manipulate a system, it shouldn't be at the cost of the disadvantaged.

Had to get that out of my system.

whitesox05 tell me about those kids, they sound awesome. tell me about their ec's, their full stats etc. more importantly tell me (and us) how they presented themselves to the adcoms. thanks a bundle!

I did only 3 years of high school (9th, 11th and 12th), so with fewer years, would they consider my freshman year or only my junior and senior year grades?

wait....Princeton doesn't cound freshman year grades?!?!?!?

I thought they did....gosh, that was like the only year I had a 4.0 (uw)

I thought they did too. I thought only Stanford didn't...

Yeah, I like frosh year grades, too. Later in HS, 5-6 APs at a time takes its toll.

I'll join the bandwagon. I also had a good freshman year. Can someone find out if they count freshman year grades.

They do not count freshman year grades.
Which is good because I had a 3.3 :)

From what I hear, Princeton completely recalculates grades with a formula of their own, sophmore year on. I think only legit classes count, and no band/religion etc.

I also don't think they pay too much attention to freshman year activities either

of course I may be mistaken on all of this

Damn, I did my best freshman year. :( Where did you get your info.?

I know for a fact that they don't consider freshman grades. I forget where I learned this, but I am positive of it. Maybe it was the info session I went to. I know because I remember getting depressed because I'm in the same boat as everyone else....my freshmen grades were the best as well.

Icargirl
"To be honest, if I had to bet money on the OP's chances, I would guess that he wouldn't get in."
now let me get this straight im arrogant and youre not? we are saying the same thing......of course I cant be sure... duh.
listen im offering an opinion thats all. not one person here has a crystal ball. calm down.

"legit classes. I think only legit classes count, and no band/religion etc"

haha. there goes half of my accellerated courses... Music Perfomance ... Studies in Religion ... Sociology ... and 20th century history .... hahahaha

yea i felt the same way. only good thing is good bye honors math :) (damn 85)

(wow how did i post a response at the same time. lol. you can call me flash :) )

No Kathy. You're saying that the person doesn't have a shot, a terribly rude thing to say considering you have no idea what the precise criteria is.
Icargirl is saying that the shots are low, the case for all of us non-URM, non-Legacy, non-Olympiad winners. Huge difference there. If I had to bet my money on my chances, I'd say I'm not getting in either. And knowing the little I do about you, I'm not betting on your chances at Yale, either.

"non-URM, non-Legacy, non-Olympiad winners" ... you forgot non-recruited athletes and nobel prize winners :p

Out of the non- legacy, non-olympiad, non-recruited, non-urm and from an ORM nobody can be sure of admit and quite frankly I will bet 100 dollars (aussie dollars btw) against myself. GO get a dice kath. Roll it and if you get a 7 you are the most sensitive person and the most non-troll person in the whole wide world.

kjoodles you are in Australia now I get it. You have that British wit. Now I understand completely. Cautious Pessimism I will get in somewhere and so will everyone else... I heard the hostility builds on the board the closer we get to December..........first im a troll then im insensitive... and the dice comment.........honestly I hope you get in where you want, and I hope you do too Cautious Pessimism... you are dismissing my chances of acceptance.. and fortunately that means nothing to the Yale Adcoms its all about numbers, essays a little luck and geography.. Good luck to all of you I harbor no ill will.....................I am sure you will get in wherever you like ........i wouldnt use the "troll" notion on my essay though-
