what is the score for commended scholars on the PSAT? 205?

I think it's 200 for PSAT taken in oct 2006.

does the student get notified officially. I think my d got 205. . not good enough for nmf, but good enough to at least put on college apps ( but I don't want her to put that down unless we get notified officially)

The cutoff for commended students this year is 200. All qualifying students who scored 200 or above were notified in April that they were among the top 50,000 scorers on the October 2006 test. Letters were initially sent to the students' high schools, then forwarded to students. These letters explained that further notice of the student's official status would be sent in September: 34,000 of this group will be recognized as commended, and 16,000 will be named NM Semi-Finalists.

The letter also offered all students to opportunity to notify 2 schools of their interest through the National Merit Scholarship Corp. The deadline to do this was May 23rd. Your d should have received this information - if she hasn't, I think it would be a good idea to call her GC and ask about it.

Good advice from frazzled; if your guidance counselor isn't helpful, you should call National Merit directly.

I can't remember when dd took PSATs, if they only offer it once at the high schools, then DD must have taken it in Oct. . .I will have to call her counselor because dd got 207 taking it her soph year, and 205 taking it fall of jr year (eg last fall). But we didn't get notified from the school --nor did we get a letter from National Merit.

You shall definitely check your D's school. A 205 is good enough to be a commended student.

Sounds like your daughter's school didn't bother distributing the letters. Was your daughter a junior when she took the test? I think it only counts for NMS if taken as a junior, unless the student is planning to graduate early, and notes the anticipated graduation date on the exam registration. I'm not sure about that, however.

a 205 should definitely be commended. and you should have heard about being top 50,000 about a month ago.
but the letters go to the schools.
she'll get official commended notice in september... again through the school.

I got the letter with a 208, but I didn't choose to report the score because my SAT score was soooo much better.

Ya same here. i got 202 on psat and got it.

Anyone know what a perfect psat is? Or what's the highest score you've heard of someone getting?

Commended score cutoffs vary for each state. The northern states and coastal states (west and east coast states like NY, NJ, CA, etc.) typically have the highest cutoffs.

Perfect is 240.

Commended score cutoff is national. The cutoff for semifinalist varies by state.

ye our school didn't even bother handing them out. I had to go to my GC and ask about them. THen, we went into a back closet and found them lying there somewhere.....my school is so bad with this stuff. Plus, it was a day before the deadline, so we almost missed it lol

aww man i had a 195
