there's a brand new parent forum getting started at www.artofproblemsolving.com for parents of kids with a strong interest or talent for mathematics. It is not a college admissions site, so it would in no way compete with College Confidential! But parents of math whiz kids might be interested.

Yes, there is a good mix of middle-school-level precollege info there, and some comments about long-after-college career issues. Most people who post there soon here about CC, as indeed I learned about CC from another forum on that site.

Are they going to start a section geared to parents on the Forum?

I attended my first math competition this weekend - The Harvard MIT Mathematics Tournament. I was driving the team and they asked me to be a proctor. It was great to meet kids I'd only heard about from other math competitions. The team I proctored was inexperienced and didn't know enough to divide up the work. I had to just sit there and watch them spend half of their time on the first problem when they had fifteen to do.

It was a hoot just being at MIT though - the buildings don't have names, they're all numbered!

yes, it's already started! They just started w/in the past week or so, though, so not a lot of people yet. I'm trying to get the word out. I know there are a number of parents on CC with very math-talented kids. Parents of any-aged mathy kids are welcome, but the over-all site is geared towards middle and high school math competitions, so the new forum is expected to be for parents of mathy kids of that age (or other adults who work with mathy kids in this age group).

It's great that the forum has been launched. I'm sure lots of parents of mathy kids will want to check it out.
The HMMT was the last competition my S will be attending as a high schooler. It was fun for him--he met up with quite a few of his friends-- and for us as well: I got to meet some of the parents, some again, some for the first time.

The HMMT was started by 2 Texas kids who went to Harvard. It is patterned on a much older competition held every year at Rice University in Houston. All the mathy kids from all over Texas and Louisiana attend, so it's also a nice opportunity for them to see friends. I'll be taking a team there next week-end. They're all looking forward to it, but particularly my son. Like Marite's son, it's one of those "last of his high school career" things.
