For people from urban/suburban areas...

Probably the biggest negative about UConn in my case is that it's a very rural setting, basically in the middle of nowhere. I'm from a suburban area about 20 minutes from New York City, and I'm not used to being surrounded by nothing but trees, farms, and grass...and quite frankly, I think it might drive me a little nuts. Then again, maybe I'd get used to it. I really can't picture not being able to hop in my car and drive 10 minutes to the mall, or not being able to go out to a club or bar when I wanted. But maybe it won't be so bad once I get used to it.

I'm looking for UConn students that are from urban/suburban areas, like me. How has the transition been into a very rural area? Is it a major problem, or does it not bother you? This is a deciding factor for me, so please try to be as unbiased as possible when answering...thanks...

I'm not a UCONN student, but you can hop in your car at UCONN and hit a mall in about 10 minutes...although it's a pretty small mall. There's not a single city in CT that can compare to NYC, but you can get to Boston in an hour and half, or Providence in about 45 mintues (still not NYC, but better than Hartford).

Coming from a kid who wanted to go to NYU because he missed the city but was rejected... (grew up in Brooklyn, live in suburban area 10 mins from Htfd, 20 from Storrs)

I go up to Storrs quite frequently since I have a lot of friends up there... but most of the time... they come to us. (Down in Htfd ~25 minutes) Either hit up a club (Blu, Brickyard, etc) or go to a party... Or if I go up there with them, we'll drive over to Springfield (Sky, Hippodrome, etc) or head over to Boston. There's Buckland Hills Mall with lots of stores in the area too about 15 minutes away from campus...

Or just stay on campus and have big parties... after all, that is what UConn is known for. (Oh that and the great academic program of course)

Btw, I'm a high school senior in the Htfd area planning to go to UConn next year...

In my opinion, no matter where you go to school... you'll make friends and find good times.

nyfan2rl said it best. Also there is huskies which is a great hangout and they have great parties sometimes. It can be a bit of an adjustment to make, but if you make friends, you will enjoy your time here. It is college after all.

manchester, ct (where buckland mall is) is a HUGE shopping hub. big mall, outdoor 'lifestyle' shopping plazas, restaurants, bars, big box stores, etc etc.

its about 20 minutes from campus.

how do you get to the mall if you dont have a car on campus?

And therein lies the dilemma...

hopefully you'll meet/know somebody that has a car.

you can take the willi bus which is free for uconn students to get to the East Brook Mall. Check the link below

I'm originally from Raleigh, North Carolina (Wake county, 1,000,000+ residents) and moved to a small town in West Virginina about a year ago. In all honesty...I never got used to it. There's no Whole Foods or Freshmarket, everyone hangs out at Wal-Mart...no one knows what a Barnes & Noble or a Borders is...the first Starbucks only opened a few months ago, ect. I hate it here, and to beat all, I'm moving to Storrs to go to UConn...great -__-.

I heard that "Cow Tipping" continues to be a very popular co-ed club sport that many UConn students enjoy if drinking to excess and pitch-fork tossing is not your scene.
