For people that go to Uf...(help with housing)

Okay, so I got the email about housing and the day to pick my dorm is April 5th. I want to live in either an apartment or suite-style dorm, so either beaty, springs, or lakeside. Which would you recommend for a freshman?

Also, I'm actually leaving that day to visit FSU and UF. Will picking my room take a while? Like more than an hour? I'm supposed to leave at 6 and I pick my room at 4. I would do it after I visit but I don't want all the spots to fill up!

Lakeside too far, I have lived in Springs and for me it was the best.

Is Springs kind of far from campus too? That’s what I’ve heard. Did you live there as a freshman? My only concern with that dorm is that on their website it says 49% freshmen and 51% upperclassmen, and beaty is 20% upperclassmen, 80% freshmen. I want to make sure I can room with and meet other freshmen.

Springs is on campus. All of the UF operated dorms are on campus. It is located in the central part of campus on the Northern edge. In addition to being 51% upperclassmen, it also has a large athletic student population and recruited athletes are given priority here during Fall and Spring semesters. It is one of the nicest dorm setups (double suite with adjoining bath room), but probably not easy to get into. My daughter lived here during Summer B her Freshman year. Beaty is mostly Freshman. Rawlings and Broward are very social, you are sure to make friends there.

Springs and Beaty aren’t too bad. Lakeside is far from everything except the gym and Id imagine pretty expensive for what you get. Should just go off campus and get a better deal on being far away than live at Lakeside

I would suggest Beaty, just based on my preferences.

When choosing just keep in mind location. Springs is near all the sports facilities, and is where the student athletes normally live. Beaty is close to the dining hall, basketball/volleyball/tennis courts and just centrally located all around.

I just looked at the virtual tour of all of the dorms, are all the beds in beaty bunk beds?

Beatty is a good choice if you want the apartment style. Just be aware it’s not easy to meet other people in that style of dorm. Prior threads always have students who regret going into one of the apartment types because they don’t meet people as easily as it is in the more traditional dorm.

Well supposedly beaty is almost full now :frowning: They are closing beaty east for the innovation academy, so there are less spots. So Lakeside or Springs? I’m choosing my housing on Thursday. And just in case I can’t get either of those, what’s the nicest traditional dorm?

@Gabby0721 - I just checked and Beaty West has 25 vacancies right now. And you are correct, Beaty East has no vacancies available. Lakeside has 84 openings, and Springs 74. My son picked Broward because of the social aspect and that it’s close to dining and classes. I’ve heard the Murphree dorms are nice but they are on the other side campus and have a mix of upperclassman and freshman vs. the Broward area which is mostly freshman I think.

@Gabby, no they’re not all bunk beds. You can turn the beds in most dorms into bunks if you wish, but you don’t have to.

I’d personally pick Springs over Lakeside if you were choosing between the two. Lakeside is pretty expensive, and IMO not worth the extra cost.

If you choose to go for one of the more traditional dorms, Jennings is good (right next to Beaty). Broward is right next to the dining hall and I half of it got renovated last summer, and I think the other half is getting renovated this summer, so it could be pretty nice.

My son lives in Beaty west this year and the beds will probably be bunked when you arrive on your first day. You can un-bunk them but be warned that with one against the wall and the other right next to it - there will only be, at most, 18 inches between beds.

My housing selection date isn’t until the 19th. Though I’m not really sure why. I payed my deposits on time and they said I get priority housing because I have Florida prepaid…but that’s another issue. I was just wondering how filled up broward is for the fall. Does anyone know? Do you think there will still be space when my date comes?

There are still a lot of vacancies in Broward. Here’s what there is:

Area Name Male Female

Beaty Towers 7 0
Broward Area 138 294
Graham Area 49 96
Jennings Area 4 67
Lakeside Area 77 72
Murphree Area 115 71
Springs Area 72 25
Tolbert Area 87 191
Yulee Area 62 120

Thank you!!!

You’re welcome. The housing priority date is based on when you first applied for housing and paid your $25. Typically this could be done a couple of days after you submitted your application for admission. If you applied in August you got to pick yesterday. Dates for picking your room, app date and total number of applications there are, are listed here: [Parents & Guardians - Room Assignments & Payments - UF | Housing & Residence Education](http://www.housing.ufl.edu/liveon/assignments.php)

Does this info apply to freshman housing or the halls in general? I know freshmen choose their dorms first, so do the upperclassmen simply get the leftovers or is there an alotted amount of spaces for freshmen?

Side note, I am a Junior transferring in Summer B, and chose to live on campus. Can anyone say how dorm life is during the summer? Do you still meet people or is the university/dorms kinda empty/quiet?

The halls I chose were

1)Murphee
2)Lakeside
3)Springs

I would prefer to have my own room, but wouldn’t mind a double, and I’d prefer to be in a place with more upper classmen.

Info/Advice?

I think the returning students have already picked their rooms. We logged in to get housing at 4pm yesterday and many of the dorm rooms were already taken by what we assume were upperclassmen.

I second that, I believe upperclassmen have first choice on housing :)

I’m a little confused. My date is 4/9/12. will there be no vacancies in Beaty or is that list the only stuff that’s left. Do they release a certain amount of rooms per day? UF guarantees housing and there are 6000+ freshman so the numbers don’t add up. Can someone please clarify this.
